Hello and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

So, you’ve just lost all the weight you ever wanted and are now at your ideal weight. Or, perhaps more likely, you have just reached a good weight and are content to maintain it for the foreseeable future. Ok, now what?

That is the topic of Jimmy’s interview today with weight loss/maintenance journalist and restaurant critic Russ Lane. Russ is the publisher and ringleader of the website SecondHelpingOnline.com, where he and his team of collaborators report and blog about various aspects of life for the newly-thin with a special focus on helping you STAY that way.

Listen in as they discuss the pitfalls and traps to be aware of, dealing with people’s changing attitude to us as we svelt-down, losing weight while eating out for a living, and Russ’ Low-Carb Bona Fides. You’ll get all of this and more in Episode 317! Don’t miss a single minute!

  1. Thanks so much for the interview, Jimmy! I had a blast, and I walked away from our talk realizing just how much my low-carb roots influenced the ideas my team and I explore at Second Helping.

I started low carb just before its popular peak — as you’re supposed to do it, not the “Hollywood Image” of low carb living — and for every compliment I received an equal number of “you’re doing it wrong and you’ll die and here are 2000 Very Authoritative Studies telling you why.”

The funny thing (besides the Very Authoritative Studies finally viewing low carb eating as equally valid as the other “right” weight loss methods) is that as I changed eating methods for various reasons, EVERY method I adopted provoked identical responses.

It struck me as odd: not only does our culture demand we lose weight, it demands we lose weight in “the right way” that doesn’t actually seem to exist.
My weight loss journey’s made me very ambivalent about our culture’s tendency to champion or vilify the latest good/evil weight loss method du jour.

Every weight loss method (even the really wacky ones that make us roll our eyes or recoil in disgust) can potentially change someone’s life for the better — even if it’s just making someone realize how to transform their lives more efficiently/effectively/compassionately/etc.. Sometimes you need the realization that what you’re doing isn’t going to get your life where you want it to be. Lord knows I did and do.

Besides, I found all the this-diet-versus-that bickering overshadowed the more germane question:

Regardless of how you did it, what are you going to do with your life now you’ve hit goal? “Weight Loss Success Story” hype aside, what’s really entailed with making your weight loss success stick? Methods for maintaining weight are very different from losing weight, and these are mostly ignored. Even moreso are all the mental/emotional/psychological changes that accompany a major body change.

In other words, Now what? You’ve given your life a fresh start, a clean plate if you will. What’s your second helping going to look like?

Thanks again Jimmy and would love to hear your comments and questions!

    Best,
    Russ Lane

I couldn’t have said it better myself, Russ! THANK YOU for an excellent interview!

  2. Good podcast, Jimmy and Russ! And, yes, we so do like hearing what others are eating, especially those who have been so successful! 🙂

Russ is providing a good service and his attitude of supporting people in finding what works for them is wonderful.
