After spending the past few weeks sharing interviews with the various experts featured in Jimmy Moore’s new book Keto Clarity, we’re back to our regular podcast schedule again and we welcome in someone who Jimmy first featured back in Episode 589 when she was just getting her name out there in the Paleo health blogosphere. Her name is Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, PhD who has quite the story to tell about how she got into looking at the role of nutrition as a major player in optimizing health. She spent four years conducting research on innate immunity and inflammation, but decided to become a stay-at-home mom to raise her family. It was during this time at home that Sarah discovered she was dealing with an autoimmune inflammatory skin condition known as Lichen Planus as well as irritable bowel syndrome and allergies and that’s when she turned to the Paleo diet which helped her heal these conditions and set her on the path to becoming the author of two books on the subject: her New York Times bestseller from early 2014 called The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body and her brand new companion book of recipes entitled The Paleo Approach Cookbook: A Detailed Guide to Heal Your Body and Nourish Your Soul.
WATCH DR. SARAH BALLANTYNE’S #AHS14 LECTURE
“Ancestral Health for Women” – Sarah Ballantyne & Stacy TothIf you watch the above video from the 2014 Ancestral Health Symposium (#AHS14) that took place in Berkeley, California in August, then you will see the presentation that instigated Jimmy to invite Sarah on to the show for an interview. During that lecture she conducted with Stacy Toth from the “Paleo Parents” blog, there were claims made about low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diets that were less-than-flattering about this way of eating. Because we like to have conversations about nutrition and health here at “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” podcast, Jimmy invited her on to state her case so that the listeners could then decide whether or not her points were valid. Listen in as Jimmy and Sarah talk about the moment she found out her book hit the New York Times bestsellers list for the first time, why she released two books in the same year, why she thinks the Paleo message has taken off in recent years, how Paleo has evolved since it first became popularized, why her response to a ketogenic diet is “no, but,” her primary objections for women, especially of childbearing age, to be reducing their carbohydrate intake, her concerns about thyroid and gut health without the use of carbohydrates, the layout of the recipes in her new book, and a whole lot more! Because Jimmy and Sarah are friends, this is a friendly yet super-engaging debate of ideas you won’t want to miss.

What an inciteful discussion – had to listen to it several times! I am currently on a ketogenic diet (measuring those ketones on my Ketonic every day) but still feel very tired and worn out. I couldn’t understand why and am now getting a better idea. I have some health issues which are best served by a ketogenic approach and others which may not. Right now, the ones that do are a higher priority. After listening today, I realize I have a higher micro nutrient requirement than many on a ketogenic lifestyle. I will review Dr. Terry Wahl’s chapter on her Paleo Plus protocol – a ketogenic, nutrient dense protocol for healing. I have Sarah’s book and will move it to the top of my must read pile. I think it will prove very useful in discussions with my doctor who uses a paleo approach in her metabolic clinic. Sarah’s new cookbook sounds like it will make a wonderful addition to my kitchen. Thank you both so much for such an informative show!
THANKS for listening, Mary!
A delightful contrast of points of view, informative and thought provoking, thank-you! I’m going to listen to this again!
I usually just listen without commenting but I had to just put in my two cents. I love this show and am always glad that it gives different viewpoints. I am a little perplexed though that Dr. Ballantyne uses lack of research on long term effects of ketosis as a reason to stay away, yet talks about the microbiome which at this point is still an unknown arena. We have 500+ different bacteria in our gut and still are unsure about each and its value. There currently are a lot of theories but no absolutes on which bacteria are beneficial. How can the gut study do anything other than report what they find and make speculation as to what that means? Should we base any health prescriptions on just that either?
Sorry that I am late in getting to this podcast. This so much increased my respect for your podcast. You are one of the few with an open mind. Keep your style. I will always listen to all viewpoints. I lean toward your viewpoint, in case you wonder.
