Dr. Michael Dansinger, influential researcher and consultant for TV’s The Biggest Loser is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!
Dr. Dansinger’s reputation as a respected nutrition researcher was secured when he conducted a four-way, head-to-head study of the efficacy of the most popular diets, including Atkins low-carb. The results were that all diets tested, including low-carb, were equally good at helping weight loss as long as the dieters exhibited strong compliance with their respective diet plan. Listen in as he and Jimmy discuss that important research, his work with The Biggest Loser (including what goes on statistically after folks leave the show) and his new project involving diabetes treatment and prevention. Don’t miss this fantastically encouraging episode!

Thanks Jimmy,
as you say, just a TV show (not one that I chose to watch BTW) and I think the wild-card here is the constant support/nagging to keep on track.
Regarding the show diet basically being seen as a “low-Fat, calorie-restricted” approach… as Tom Naughton pointed out on his FatHead Blog: if the body is burning around 2,500 calories a day but we only eat 1,500 calories, then the other 1,000 calories has to come from our own fat mass stores (which are virtually identical to pig fat, AKA lard)… in other words this has now become a diet High in Saturated Animal Fat! I always thought it strange that we would be adapted to store a major energy source in a form that will clog our arteries and make us drop dead 😉
The issues as I see it with calorie-restriction are that: 1) you are restricting ALL nutrients and I wonder how much of the “weight” loss is lean mass? and 2) how do you stop the body going into starvation mode and slowing down the metabolic rate? Perhaps again that is where the “exercise” plays a role and may also explain why some (many?) fail when the support/nagging is no longer provided.
I know from personal experience that the traditional approach of “calorie-restriction while flogging oneself at the gym” only ever had short term effects. In my opinion this approach relies on working AGAINST the body (like trying to hold your breath until you pass out… over and over again) while changing to a LC/HF diet relies on an understanding of the underlying physiology and works WITH the body.
great show as always Jimmy – one thing though – for the past few shows now the soundtrack was really hard to listen to – there’s an intence echo of your voice, which causes it to obscure what you’re saying quite a bit.
Thanks Magdalena! Yes we are aware of those audio issues and apologize profusely. When these shows were recorded I was trying a fancy new mike that was supposed to be the best–obviously not. With the new shows coming up in mid-December the sound will be much better. Again, I’m sorry the sound has been below standard.
Jimmy, just finished the interview. Great challenges on the Biggest Loser perception. No matter who the guest, you have the sweetest yet most persistent way of gettin in your points
and logic on the Jimmy’s Way. Atta by, keep em honest.
Hmmm…I tried to listen but for some reason it cuts off after you ask the question about chicory root in the Quest bars. I tried several times but I can’t seem to get past that glitch even when I try to skip over it.
I’m using Firefox but I’ve not had this problem before.
Great to hear about the diabetes reversal clinics based on lifestyle interventions rather than medication. Long overdue.
Hi Jimmy
Here’s something to cheer your Friday:

‘However, Danish researchers say they have come up with the perfect diet to lose weight and keep it off.
According to the world’s largest diet study, the best way to lose weight is to stick to a high protein/low glycaemic index (GI) diet with more lean meats, low fat dairy products and beans and fewer refined carbohydrates such as white bread and rice.’
Nina
Having listened tens of your great interviews, this was definitely on the top of the list, thanx!
