The Livin' La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore Episode 409, Evelyn Parham

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/llvlcshow/llvlc409-evelyn-parham.mp3[/podcast]

Evelyn Parham, raw food vegan blogger, is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Lowcarb Show with Jimmy Moore.

Today Jimmy has the pleasure of speaking with an old high school and college friend named Evelyn Parham who took a different path in the world of health. Evelyn is the popular blogger behind the site Become a Healthier You which is dedicated to spreading the message of a raw foods vegan diet for health. Listen to Evelyn as she talks about her path as a (mostly) raw food (mostly) vegan dieter, her path to becoming a vegan, her open-mindedness towards other ways of eating like low-carb, gestational diabetes, and so much more! It really is the kinder, gentler side of raw food veganism.

But first, there are two very exciting announcements we’d like to share with you. First, we are now soliciting entries for your Top 10 favorite guests of 2010: Let us know which interview guests you think were the best of the best this past year on the podcast (and there were a TON of them in 2010!), along with your questions for each of them so you can help determine who the guests will be for our special weeklong “Encore Week” coming up in January!

Then, you’ve been asking for it and we’re almost ready to deliver! We are announcing a soon-to-be-launched special subscription-based fan club for our most enthusiastic listeners. The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show Fan Club members will have access to many perks, including transcripts of our most popular episodes, snippets from freshly-completed interviews months before they air, a chance to submit your questions for interview guests BEFORE they are interviewed, and so much more. The transcription process has already begun and getting all of our ducks in a row now to make this a reality by the new year. Keep listening for further details!

  1. I’ve noticed that vegans/vegetarian advocates are almost always women or small men.
I’m 6’3 and once tried being a vegetarian and have never been so hungry in my life! it was like eating air haha I need 3000 calories per day just to maintain 175 lbs…it amazes me how little food my wife needs to eat.

  2. Evelyn seems like a wonderful person and I respect what she has done but I didn’t really get the show. She is neither a vegan or a raw foodist by her own admission on the show. I was a vegan and am now doing low carb so I was interested, I just didn’t get the connection after hearing her talk about her diet. Love your podcasts, keep up the good work just didn’t get the point of this one. I enjoyed listening to her through.

    1. JLC, thanks for listening! The point of this podcast was that there are some people on the nutrition journey who identify themselves with the vegan movement and yet aren’t these radical defenders of that way of eating for everyone. Plus, Evelyn is someone I knew many years ago in high school and college so it was kinda nice to see the path she has taken compared with what I’m doing. She’s doing fantastic work!

    2. I don’t know that she’s neither a vegan nor a raw foodist. You could make an argument that she’s not a raw foodist, because she regularly eats some cooked veggies, but as to her veganism, well let’s put it like this:

You are a low carber. Once a month you eat one slice of pizza or cake, or have a piece of chocolate. Does that mean you aren’t a low-carber? I don’t think so.

By definition a vegan diet is one that contains not only no meat, but no animal products at all. Granted we’re not used to hearing about Vegans who go “off-diet” occasionally, but is she really any less of a vegan than you’d be a low-carber in the above scenario?

  3. Hey Jimmy,

Great interview with Evelyn and thanks for the shout out! I really enjoy reading her blog. She is not like such a hardcore vegan/vegetarian like the PETA people. I love how she places an emphasis on eating plenty of veggies and organic which us low carb people advocate. She give such great info. and that is why I like reading her blog.

Anyway, thanks again for the shout out!

    1. HEY Michelle! Great to hear from you and I was happy to throw some props your way. And you’re exactly right–Evelyn is the antithesis of what most PETA-style vegans are like.

  4. If eating vegan or vegetarian translates to better blood sugar, insulin levels, blood lipids, and hormonal levels, and you get all the nutrition you need (regarding protein and fats), then right on! Ultimately its about being healthy. People are omnivores and can eat anything. Like Jimmy always says, its about finding what works for you and sticking to it.
