Every five years, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) convenes a panel of experts on nutrition and health called the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee to determine the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and they recently announced the latest version in force now through 2020. We’ve been following these guidelines closely hoping they would make major shifts away from the same old failed conventional wisdom that has plagued us since 1980. And when I interviewed investigative journalist Nina Teicholz, author of the New York Times bestselling book The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet, about the potential changes in April 2015, she was hopeful that things would be different this time around. But in this exclusive Periscope interview (see all his daily Periscope videos at JimmyScopes.com) our host Jimmy Moore recently conducted with Nina, she shares the full details on what was put into the Dietary Guidelines.

Listen in as Jimmy and Nina talk about whether the Scientific Advisory Committee for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans are based on the latest science, the heavy influence on our culture of these guidelines, Nina’s British Medical Journal article The scientific report guiding the US dietary guidelines: is it scientific?, why they completely ignored the literature supporting the low-carbohydrate diet, the tremendous backlash she got for her BMJ article, the tiny changes that have been made to the new guidelines (limiting added sugars, alcohol and caffeine are now okay, soy milk is now recommended, and the drop on the caps on dietary cholesterol), the new look at dietary patterns instead of macronutrients (although all the science is on macros), why the low-fat diet is dead and nobody knows it, how the actual recommendations are virtually identical what they were back in 2005, Nina’s non-profit group Nutrition Coalition, the National Academy of Medicine review requirements before the 2020 Dietary Guidelines, whether the guidelines will ever get away from the government reigns, the congressional hearing that happened last Fall over these guidelines, why the guidelines are still relevant despite the criticism about them, and the legal strong-arming that is happening against low-carb diets and dietary fat.
