When it comes to the low-carb, high-fat community, a select few names rise to the top of the list when it comes to legends who have taken this message to new heights. This includes, of course, the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins, the originator of the first bestselling low-carb diet book in the 1800’s named William Banting, low-carb diabetes champion Dr. Richard Bernstein, ketogenic diet researcher Dr. Stephen Phinney, and today’s podcast interview guest. His name is Dr. Ron Rosedale from DrRosedale.com (listen to Jimmy’s previous interviews with Dr. Rosedale in Episode 863, Episode 789, and on “Ask The Low-Carb Experts” Episode 2). It’s been a decade since Dr. Rosedale released his book on leptin entitled The Rosedale Diet and he’s been very quiet over the past few years as he has devoted time to doing philanthropic medical work in India. Currently he is living up the road from where Jimmy lives in the mountains of North Carolina and Jimmy decided to drive up to his home there for an exclusive interview he conducted on his Periscope channel.
Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Rosedale cover a wide array of health topics like the poor high-carb, vegetarian diet of the people of India, high-fat diets, how India produces a lot of eggs but they don’t eat them, Dr. Rosedale’s “egg diet,” why autoimmune thyroid is made worse by eating carbohydrates, why there is hair loss while on a low-carb diet (his answer is VERY technical, so take notes!), how biotin and Vitamin C along with saw palmetto, copper, and potassium to stave off hair loss, why he prefers to use the term “high-fat” rather than “low-carb,” why a high-protein diet is incredibly problematic, his concerns with the work of Drs. Mike and Mary Dan Eades, how to moderate protein intake since most fats are bound with protein, whether people wanting to build muscle should eat more protein or not, how a fat-burner protects lean muscle mass, what a typical eating pattern is like for Dr. Rosedale, what he thinks about fasting for added health benefits, why he believes eating fat while fasting is necessary, how a lower thyroid number is likely a better function, why he’s concerned about losing lean mass on a total fast and how to prevent it, how the body will tap into lean mass to get required glucose, why calorie restriction benefits are from lowering protein, why increased iron consumption raises oxidation, how an egg is the perfect health food, his upcoming book projects, and a whole lot more. This is one fascinating interview you won’t want to miss hearing!

I always enjoy listening to Dr. Rosedale and you converse. He has years of research which strongly suggests his tried and tested approach. It is amazing how someone with much less knowledge but a good sales angle can have people running away from Dr. Rosedale when in actuality they should be running towards him. I guess people are looking for confirmation bias. Who do you consider to be Dr. Rosedale’s strongest allies for his style of diet Jimmy?
Great interview! Dr. Rosedale looks great too! Always impressed with his grasp of biochemistry and physiology and how they are connected to diet and health. Looking forward to his future publications.
Jimmy. Thank you for doing this. Dr. Rosedale was the book I found when I was in search for help when I weighted 325. I am around 255 now and working hard to get to 185. I like his low protein and some fat (instead of fasting) idea. That is why I am doing the sardine thing. Easy. Do not have to think and it provides benefits of the fast but I get to eat some. Plus they taste amazing. 🙂
Keep up the great work. I love you work.
