As more and more people begin to become aware of the food they are eating, they are becoming reconnected with exactly what they are putting in their mouth. For an award-winning television producer named Jared Stone, who won an Emmy in 2013 for his work on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he forced himself to come face-to-face with this question by committing to buying a whole cow directly from a local rancher and feeding himself and his family on it. Along the way of this wild experiment, Jared got back in touch with what real food is again and rekindled a deep love and passion for everything he is eating. He chronicled the entire experience in a fascinating new book entitled Year of the Cow: How 420 Pounds of Beef Built a Better Life for One American Family.

Listen in as Jimmy and Jared talk about how watching a television show on food made him realize how disconnected from his food he had become, how he decided on the kind of quality cow to purchase, why he believes we need more information about where our food is from, how people used to eat butter regularly, his experience making his own butter, the deceptive marketing of margarine, what the public is so afraid of in embracing real food, how he breaks free from the food system with a backyard garden, how raising the cattle for grass-fed beef is good for growing other real food, the business sense of the way the agricultural system has gone and how we can impact it, the growth of the farmer’s market movement showing people voting with their dollars, how you end up paying less for food at a farmer’s market compared to a grocery store, what his diet was like before, the high-carb foods served on television and movie sets, how eating the quality meats made him aware how inferior the rest of his food was, how bone broth helped improve the flavor of all his food, how his anthropology background led him to the Paleo diet, the random movement he started engaging in after he started eating better, the health tests he had run prior to this experiment and how they got better after eating real food, his intense focus on each part of the cow to make the most of the animal, how the one-year experiment turned into four years, the story about how he cooked the beef heart as a romantic dinner for his wife on Valentine’s Day (and how it didn’t go over so well), and the psychological toll of consuming a beef tongue.
