In the months of June and July, our host Jimmy Moore is taking some time away from his regular podcast schedule. So on Wednesdays, he’s airing older LLVLC Show Classic episodes that are no longer on iTunes. And today he has an exciting interview with a Rochester, Minnesota-based veterinarian named Dr. Travis Einertson from the Heritage Pet Hospital who is a huge fan of the low-carb lifestyle. As a specialist working with his obese and diabetic feline patients, Dr. Einertson has devised a nutritional plan he describes as the “Catkins” diet that has worked to stunning success in his feline patients! If you’re a pet lover–especially dogs and cats–then you need to listen to this engaging conversation.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Einertson discuss why he became a veterinarian, how much nutrition was taught in his training, how he discovered low-carb diets to treat the diabetes in his cat patients, the canned food-based “Catkins” diet he developed that minimizes the need for insulin, how he was vehemently opposed to the Atkins diet previously before his personal success using it, the frustration with most traditional dry cat food products, Binky’s Page for tips with your cats, ways to test your cat’s blood sugar levels (use this video to see how it’s done), how drinking and urination patterns can indicate diabetes in cats, why a fructosamine test is better than A1c in cats, why he thinks water is an important macronutrient, his thoughts on an all-raw diet for cats, how adding in coconut oil can benefit your pets, and whether the “Catkins” diet is being used by his colleagues. If you’re a pet lover, then you’re gonna enjoy this LLVLC Show Classic episode today!

  1. He mentioned he had some tips for transitioning cats from dry to wet food and I think that there would be links in the show notes. Did you get that link?

    Thanks!

Really great show, BTW. Also, there’s a wonderful web site called catinfo.org with loads of tips for feeding your cat a species appropriate diet, from another vet.

  2. It’s so refreshing to hear Dr. Einertson promoting a low carb diet for cats. I decided about a decade ago that this was the key after watching friends suffer with cats with diabetes. Knowing they are obligate carnivores I relized I needed to find the lowest carb food possible. I found EVO which had the highest protein available, and fairly low carb (though hard to tell), and now I have found a ZeroCarb DRY catfood by a company called YoungAgain. You have to order it by phone, but my cats have been loving it and it’s a nice supplement to their canned food. It’s fairly expensive, but for me it’s totally worth it. Check it out. My husband and I laugh when we hear the cat food advertisers promoting the sweet potato, vegatables, etc in their food. We’ve done our pets wrong! Makes me sad.

  3. I loved this podcast. My cat Alex became diabetic 3 years ago after eating dry food prescribed by the vet.
I was frantic and searched the net until I found diabeticcatcare site.

I have tested Alex at home and dose him on a sliding scale. Of course, he immediately went on Catkins..Fancy feast chicken varieties. He has gone in remission twice which is my goal. He is now in remission and doing great. The system is called tight regulation and is a very healthy way to keep kitty’s blood sugar under control without going low.

I tell all my friends who have kitties. You do not want a diabetic cat. So switch to a low carb plan.

    Thanks!

    1. I also placed my diabetic cat on a low carbohydrate wet food and administered insulin for a short time after finding Diabetic Cat care.

We use Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins protocol and read her book “Your Cat” My girl went off the juice in a short period of time and am so thankful.

All the junk food manufacturing make it a field for cats to become diabetic.

      Thanks
