Today we have perhaps one of the most unique podcasts we’ve ever shared with you in a conversation featuring a Baltimore, Maryland-based woman named Sara Keough. She is a recent graduate with her Master’s Degree in Integrative Nutrition and, more importantly, she has struggled with food addiction and bulimia for nearly 20 years. Jimmy met Sara on the flight back to the United States from the LCHF conference that took place in Cape Town, South Africa in February. After hearing her harrowing story of struggle with binge eating and purging, Jimmy knew he needed to share this with his listeners today to help others who have become frustrated by the way eating disorders are viewed by mainstream medicine.

Listen in as Jimmy and Sara talk about her education in nutrition and integrative health, her early interest in ketogenic diets, when she first started purging at the age of 12, how she struggled with a strong carbohydrate and sugar addiction, how the ketogenic diet helped her improve her eating disorder for longer than anything else she’d ever tried, her experience going to see doctors at Johns Hopkins to get help for her bulimia, the denial by the doctors there that she had an eating disorder, their reaction to her low-carb, high-fat diet, their decision to offer her Prozac to help with her mood issues (which she denied), why they didn’t offer up a specific diet for her to follow and told her to try not to purge, the horrible food choices they recommended she try (pancakes, really?), and her continuing struggle to deal with this condition. At the end of the interview, Jimmy put out a call to anyone who would like to help Sara in her ongoing battle with bulimia. If you can help, then please send an email to livinlowcarbman@charter.net.

  1. I have been a severe craver since childhood. I am now 66. I even tried hypnosis. Within the last two months, I saw kitchen safes on Shark Tank. I own 3 of them. Each morning I take out the food I plan to eat for the day and set the lock. If I eat everything at once, too bad. I have to wait for the next day. I currently have nuts, oatmeal and sometimes apples. Craving is now a disease and I hear the food calling me to the kitchen. Since I have been using the safes, my attitude toward food has changed. I hardly every hear food calling me. The safes can go in the fridge, but not the freezer. I e-mailed them to try to make a safe for the freezer. Imagine coconut ice cream!
