Although the low-carb message has been out there for more than a century, the interpretation of what that looks like on a meal plate and the purpose for eating this way is still one of hot debate today. Unfortunately, many modern-day low-carb dieters make the mistake of including suspicious food items (grains, sugars, fake sweeteners) that wouldn’t be recognized by people in the original low-carb diet days of William Banting while putting all the emphasis of restricting carbohydrates on losing weight. That’s why it’s great to have people like registered dietitian Franziska Spritzler from the “Low Carb Dietitian” blog articulating the use of a real, whole foods-based low-carb lifestyle for the purposes of improving health and beauty. It’s such a different take on the standard use of a low-carb diet that Franziska has put it all together in a brand new book about it entitled The Low Carb Dietitian’s Guide to Health and Beauty: How a Whole-Foods, Low-Carbohydrate Lifestyle Can Help You Look and Feel Better Than Ever.

Listen in as Jimmy and Franziska share about the whole lifestyle that improves health and looks (not just about weight loss), why a whole foods-based diet is critical to making a low-carb diet work well, how saying you can’t eat higher quality food is an invalid excuse, why the Atkins products and other “low-carb” products may not be great for you, who she was trying to reach with the “beauty” part of her book title, why she is proud to be 48 and still look so young, how the Paleo and real food movement have played a major role in shifting low-carb dieters, the concerns about ketosis from dietitians and health professionals, the persistence at promoting whole grains as healthy, how people rationalize eating grains over fat and protein, the illustration of the amount of sugar in the blood vs. the ADA’s idea of healthy amounts of carbohydrates for diabetics to consume, why even whole foods promoted by the Paleo community can be problematic for people with insulin resistance, how people can determine whether a low-carb diet is right for them, why including more salt and fat in your diet is necessary on a low-carb diet, how a low-carb diet can provide benefits even without being ketogenic, the various options that are available for people wanting to eat low-carb, helping people recognize where they are in their carb tolerance, why she still put the calories and nutritional data in her recipes (for those people who obsess over those things), why the sugar substitute issue is still debated, her recommendations to have some of these in small amounts (but not the sugar alcohols like maltitol found in many sugar-free chocolates), how reducing your taste for sweet down will help your health, why she falls down on the side of net carbs vs. total carbohydrates, the importance of getting an adequate fiber intake, how the rest of the world lists fiber separately from total carbohydrates on the nutrition labels, and the ton of recipes she provided in her book.
