When you think about the Paleo movement these days, so many great names come to mind–Robb Wolf, Mark Sisson, Sarah Fragoso, Nora Gedgaudas, and more. But two decades ago, there were very few people sharing about how our ancestors ate and lived in pursuing and maintaining optimal health. It was the very infancy of the modern Paleolithic diet advocacy with names like Dr. Boyd Eaton, Dr. Mike Eades, and Dr. Loren Cordain. But one man who helped merge the message of Paleo with low-carb, high-fat diets was a self-professed “computer nerd” named Ray Audette who researched and studied the Paleo lifestyle to help him with his own health issues which all got considerably better once he made the switch over to a concept he refers to in the title of his book about it called Neanderthin: Eat Like a Caveman to Achieve a Lean, Strong, Healthy Body. This is now considered a classic Paleo book and the Kindle version is now available with new information if you have never read it before.
Listen in to hear Jimmy and Ray discuss how he was talking about Paleo long ago, how his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis turned him to nutrition to heal his body, the ten commandments of his program (5 do eats, 5 don’t eats), how he sold 10,000 copies of his self-published book before a major publisher picked it up, how his book is more for the masses compared to Dr. Eaton’s book, the focus on his diet being a high-fat diet vs. Dr. Cordain’s original lean proteins thinking, why orangutans get into ketosis for six months out of the year, Paleo simply means eating what a primate eats, why he thinks Paleo has made such a huge comeback in recent years, how he was talking about high-fat diets (with the late Dr. Mary Enig) when it wasn’t even close to being accepted, how traditional cultures have done quite well without starchy foods, the problem with acrylamide and carcinogens, how the conventional wisdom on nutrition and fitness seems to have run its course, why eating a low-carb Paleo diet isn’t as profitable as a grain-based diet, how we’ve long known the connection between grains and cancer, how the low-fat diet has been proven as a hoax (if you’re doctor is telling you to cut your fat, you need to call your attorney!), we’ve long known of the therapeutic effects of ketogenic diets and cancer, why it’s problematic on your brain health to own cats, how Dr. Mike Eades mentioned Ray’s book in Protein Power, why he has decided to make a comeback of sorts after all the new voices have been on the scene, how healthy his son is today after his wife was pregnant with him when Ray was writing his book two decades ago, and so much more! Ray is one-of-a-kind and you’ll find that out very quickly in today’s interview.

If MY doctor ever told me to cut the fat, I’d tell her to cut the bull!
She can’t even interpret her own NMR (let alone anyone else’s), and she wonders why her LDL is so high. I told her to cut the carbs, eliminate grains and legumes, and add more fat, and then her lipid profile would begin looking like mine.
Her response? “I just have to find the right statin.”
It’s pretty bad when I know more about the NMR than she does–I’ve even had to interpret hers for her at one point.
