Self-experimentation when it comes to the subject of nutrition and health is an absolute must. The quantified self movement is growing by leaps and bounds because patients are so fed up with the failure of the current model for healthy living being used by conventional medicine that they’ve grabbed back control of their own health and doing their own n=1 experiments to test how their body responds to any given stimuli. But today’s podcast interview guest isn’t just some patient–he was traditionally trained in medical school and has been treating patients himself as their medical doctor. His name is Dr. Spencer Nadolsky (listen to his previous interview on the show in Episode 552), an osteopath and obesity medicine specialist in Virginia, who decided to test the controversial dietary waters by shifting his meals over from low-carb to high-carb to see what would happen.

Listen in to hear Dr. Nadolsky and I discuss his recent bodybuilding show, how his testosterone went to pot doing the competition, why counting macronutrients and calories were a critical element in helping him reach his body composition goals while maintaining excellent metabolic health, why he no longer worries about his macronutrients and calories anymore, how a lower-carb, higher-fat diet tends to help him keep his calories in check best, his foray into wanting to experiment with a high-carb diet to see what would happen, the reaction he received from the low-carb community to his n=1, why cravings and hunger are under control very well despite how palatable the food is on a low-carb, high-fat diet, what his experience has been with intermittent fasting, why some people thrive and others don’t do as well fasting, why he’s still eating 200-300g of carbohydrates because he’s doing well right now, how his LDL particles dropped dramatically when he cut the fat in his diet, what happened to his thyroid eating higher-carb (and his problem with people who talk bad about low-carb diets negatively impacting thyroid), how he wants to “have a baby” again doing another bodybuilding show, why he’s not personally a fan of using calorie-tracking websites like FitDay, what his diet looks like nowadays, how he was laughing at a vegan doctor who was mocking meat-eaters on Facebook, why the diet wars online are just silly, how he’s become enamored by lipidology, and a whole lot more. It’s an interesting chat about keeping an open mind and never getting too dogmatic about what you believe regarding nutritional health. ENJOY!
