After hearing all the negative comments about low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diets in the Paleo blogosphere lately, our host Jimmy Moore penned a blog post about it last week entitled “7 Lingering Myths Everyone Should Know About Low-Carb Ketogenic Diets.” As we heard in Episode 868 yesterday from Paleo blogger, podcaster, and author Dr. Sarah Ballantyne, there are very real concerns being expressed from people in the Paleo community about the use of nutritional ketosis as a means for optimizing health. But this hasn’t sat well with a Licensed Acupuncturist, Herbalist, Functional Medicine Doctor, Certified Personal Trainer, and Health Coach named Jamie Koonce.
Here’s that e-mail that Jamie sent to Jimmy recently about this:
I’m wondering what your thoughts are on the prevailing dogma in the Paleo community that women need more carbohydrates than men and should avoid ketosis and intermittent fasting. These claims don’t seem to be backed up by any research. (At least I’m not finding it.) After listening to a few talks from the Ancestral Health Symposium at Berkeley, I am fed up with the baseless claims and would like to respond on your podcast if you’re game.

Great podcast. I was wondering about all the anti-thyroid plants that paleo diet people eat while they pursue good health. Broccoli, kale, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. are all going to mess with your thyroid especially, flaxseeds or flaxseed flour,it will mess you up. I know some vegan folks(they did eat fish) that had their thyroids shutdown from that stuff. Tests revealed no autoimmunity and no infection. The doctors were stumped because they knew nothing about those plants that can block the absorption of iodine no matter how much seafood and iodine you take. If you eat lots of those plants daily, stay low carb you will end up with thyroid issues. I gave up almost all grain (just a little rice for me occasionally)and rarely eat those plants and my thyroid is perfect now.
As far as “keto flu” from trying to get into or adjust to ketosis, just use some MCT oil. It rocks.

Cruciferous veggies can definitely increase your requirement for iodine. Assuming you’re using real salt instead of the heavily refined iodized salt, you should eat iodine rich sea veggies such as wakame, dulse, or kelp alongside your crucifers and green leafies. Nori and sushi are not good sources of iodine. It’s also critical to get plenty of selenium alongside the iodine. This is easy to do with just one or two Brazil nuts per day. Getting too much iodine can slow thyroid function, so I wouldn’t recommend taking an iodine supplement or using iodized salt without checking your actual iodine levels to determine an appropriate dosage. Real food sources of iodine are least likely to cause a problem.
