One of the common memes put out there mostly in the Paleo community is how low-carb diets are perfect for people who are slothful and don’t do a lot of movement. But they say if you exercise just a little to the very elite level, then you had better be refueling your body with carbohydrates. But this doesn’t make any sense to pro mountain biker Christopher Kelly. After finding health through the nutritional density of a low-carb Paleo diet along with some key lab-driven functional medicine techniques, Christopher now engages in professional mountain bike races at the highest level eating a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet. When he became frustrated by the current state of healthcare offered by conventional medicine, that’s what make him partner up with wife and food scientist Julia as well as a low-carb friendly doctor named Dr. Jamie Busch to form the new practice Nourish Balance Thrive in Berkeley, California.

Listen in as Jimmy and Christopher blow the myth that you absolutely need carbs to perform athletically, why breast feeding for mothers doesn’t require as many carbohydrates as we’ve been told, the lack of evidence that exists supporting the idea that very low-carb, ketogenic diets lead to hypothyroidism, the REAL reason why low thyroid function happens on a low-carb diet, some of the basic problems his clinic is seeing in the food diaries of their clients eating low-carb, and the self-sabotage people make putting so much stress on themselves along with a sleep deficiency that can tee-totally derail your attempts to lose weight and get healthy. This podcast is SOLID GOLD from start to finish, so don’t miss a moment.

  1. You were right–this WAS solid gold from start to finish. I just wish there were something akin to the Nourish Balance Thrive program out here on the East Coast–trying to find a LC doctor that isn’t hundreds of miles away is bad enough!

Maybe it’s time to move. 🙂

  2. Especially liked the short discussion of the cortisol/glucose/ketone connection. Stress is amazingly destructive and people often don’t realize when they are stressing. Yet there’s still the effect on the body.

Hope you can mention more on this in the future. Thanks for this. A great interview! Christopher Kelly is a good man.
