A transformation has been happening in recent years regarding the way we look at sugar and its impact on our health. Thanks to people like Dr. Robert Lustig and his viral Internet lecture “Sugar: The Bitter Truth (with 4.5+ million views!), New York Times journalist Gary Taubes writing about how toxic sugar is as well as the manipulation of this fact by The Sugar Association, and New York Times bestselling author Diane Sanfilippo encouraging people to do a 21-day sugar detox, a bright light is shining down on all the negative health effects of consuming this sweet white stuff. In fact, the prestigious World Health Organization (WHO) announced in 2014 that only 5% of your daily calories should come from sugar and families around the world are conducting their own sugar-free challenges to see how well they can cope without this part of their diet they thought they could never live without. All of this has to bring a big smile to the face of today’s LLVLC Show Classic episode guest Dr. Nancy Appleton who wrote a bestselling book about this very subject called Lick the Sugar Habit–IN 1988 (when Jimmy was just a sophomore in high school)!
Dr. Appleton was anti-sugar before being anti-sugar was cool. But she certainly blazed a trail with her great work penning several more books about the health effects of sugar, including Suicide by Sugar: A Startling Look at Our #1 National Addiction and Killer Colas: The Hard Truth About Soft Drinks. And she’s also created a DVD film called Sweet Suicide sharing about how sugar has so easily penetrated our culture and the consequences of that. Here’s a 6-minute clip of this documentary:
http://youtu.be/r8ezchj4wO8Listen in to today’s LLVLC Show Classic episode interview as Jimmy and Dr. Appleton discuss why cutting out allergy-inducing foods is critical to health, whether giving up sugar cold turkey is better than doing it gradually, why consuming whole fruits is much better for your health than drinking fruit juice, the incredibly addictive nature of sugar, and so much more! Sugar is at the forefront of the health discussion in 2014 and we owe a great deal of gratitude to people like Dr. Nancy Appleton for banging this drum again and again for decades until the message finally sunk in.

Jimmy, you look real immature next to Dr. Fuhrman. He has class and you don’t. His diet may be boring but it works and you get a lot of nutrient rich foods. It is a basically a vegetarian diet with some occasional meat and dairy thrown in. What is wrong with that? You eat more meat if you want. Big deal.
What exactly does this comment have to do with my interview with Dr. Nancy Appleton. If you’re gonna troll my podcast website, then tell your precious Joel Fuhrman to contact me about coming on my podcast to discuss his philosophy with me. That invitation has been open for a while, but he must be afraid to have a friendly debate of ideas. Oh well.
Looks like Fuhrman already responded to your childish rants to his Eating to Live book so why should he come on your Amateur Podcast? Having an internet URL makes you an expert?
Cute. If he’s unable to defend what he believes and why he believes it on an “amateur podcast,” then I suppose that means he doesn’t have much to say that is meaningful. Oh well. Anyone who listens to my show knows I’m all about an open and fair discussion of ideas about health. Always have been. Always will be.
This comment does not make any sense. I am on Dr. Fuhrman’s email list, following is his top 10 worst foods to eat:
Sweetened Dairy Products (e.g. ice cream, low-fat ice cream, frozen yogurt)
Trans Fat Containing Foods (e.g. stick margarine, shortening, fast foods, commercial baked goods)
Donuts
Sausage, Hot Dogs, and Luncheon Meats
Smoked Meat, Barbecued Meat and Conventionally-Raised Red Meat
Fried Foods including Potato Chips and French Fries
Highly-salted Foods
Soda
Refined White Sugar
Refined White Flour
I don’t think Jimmy or anyone on his program would recommend eating these foods. Seems to me like a lot of these diets are converging on what to eat.
