I wonder how dr Eenfeldt would comment on the latest idea/theory/hypothesis coming from a prominent paleo website which basically states that the metabolic syndrome starts with energy overload which causes insuline resistance and inflammation in cells not being able to cope with excess nutrients.
I like Dr Eenfeldt and visit his blog frequently. I really enjoyed his first low-carb cruise presentation. However I did not find his latest presentation very compelling. It’s a nice basic introduction to low-carb but his dismissal of alternatives theory lack depth. On the other hand, I understand his time was limited and he shared his time slot with 2 other presenters. The end result however was that he didn’t have enough time to elaborate, and that made the presentation weak.
I also heard about the energy overload theory which seems an interesting new way angle. I first heard it from Chris Masterjohn, who is no dummy. The too many carbs theory appears a little too simplistic to me. If we learned anything from the low-fat debacle, is that overly simplistic explanations for complex systems are usually wrong. This takes nothing away from the effectiveness of low-carb as a solution therapeutic solution. However cure and cause should not be mixed up.
Angelyne22, interestingly both our comments mentioned the energy overload hypothesis. I personally believe that it is wrong, but it does not matter. What matters is that we listen to experts who state their beliefs/opinions and never address directly those who present opposing views. Even in this series of lectures (people who held them met in person at the cruise and must have talked to each other) we hear discrete stories: “it’s all about micronutrients”, “it’s all about toxins”, “it’s all about insuline”.
