When famed cardiologist Dr. William Davis published what would go on to become a perennial New York Times bestselling book entitled Wheat Belly in 2011, his focus was on the metabolic effects of consuming wheat and other culprit carbohydrates and their relationship to rampant obesity and chronic disease. Now that people are becoming more aware of how inferior consuming “healthy” whole grains really are on managing their weight and metabolic health, along comes a brand new book in 2013 that is set to add another compelling argument that perhaps the impact of carbohydrates like wheat, sugar and more on your brain health is the best reason to cut these foods out of your diet. The author is a highly-respected nutrition-minded neurologist practicing in Naples, Florida named Dr. David Perlmutter who has written the seminal book on this topic called Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth about Wheat, Carbs, and Sugar–Your Brain’s Silent Killers.

Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Perlmutter discuss why nutritional solutions are the only thing to prevent dementia and other neurodegenerative diseases, the fact that there is no drug or cure for many of the most common brain health issues, the heavy toll that carbohydrate consumption is having on the brain, why the brain prefers to run on ketones produced by a low-carb, high-fat diet, the incredible benefits of getting into a state of nutritional ketosis, and so much more! This is perhaps one of the most interesting podcast interviews we’ll share with you on “The “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” podcast in 2013. ENJOY!

  1. “The truth shall set you free…” Indeed! I was looking forward to the interview-you two did NOT disappoint! Thanks so much for the insights. I now have 2 books to catch up on (making my way through Good Calories.Bad Calories.) Cholesterol Clarity and GrainBrain.

As a low vision practitioner, I am excited to continue in the conversation with patients concerning what types of food they eat…how it IS important and DOES matter (whether talking about Alzheimer’s disease or macular degeneration).

    Thanks again!

    AJ

Please let me know if it is ok that I include the book/info in my blog.

  2. Jimmy NEVER disappoints! I just wish that now someone would come do a podcast solely about menopausal issues, and how ketones play a beneficial role in alleviating hot flashes. Besides that, I’d like very much to hear how to lose weight in or post-menopause without having to resort to liposuction–nothing else is working (not even keto diets or Atkins induction)! My next endeavor is the Warrior diet (which includes aspects of Carb Night), only without the carbs–they bring back the hot flashes. After the Warrior diet, it’s onto lipo for me if Warrior doesn’t work.

  3. Best podcast ever. I wish it was 3 hours. I would be very interested on Dr. Perlmutter’s view on Coconut Oil (or MCT oil) and Alzheimer’s research. The chances of putting my Dad and Mom on a ketogenic diet are zero. But adding lots of MCT oil, while doing there best to reduce carbs (which they will do naturally) is a real possibility. They love smoothies, putting in tea or coffee, etc. That’s possible.
Dad has mid-stage Alzheimer’s. We’d love to slow the progression.
Jimmy, any help or comments you have would be helpful. Can’t wait for Keto Clarity!!!

    1. Oh, I’m almost 100% certain Dr. Perlmutter favors coconut oil/MCTs for optimal brain health. Great ketone producing effect.

  4. Wow. Something a bit new on my radar. Thanks. I’ll be keen to read the “Grain Brain” when it crosses the Pacific.
