ScreenShot2013-08-04at61310PM_zps29451976 Before we get into today’s featured interview, Jimmy wanted to share a quick conversation with one of his Twitter followers named Joe Anastasi who shockingly shared last week that he felt like he had to switch away from his high-fat, low-carb diet to a high-carb, low-fat diet so his cholesterol numbers would fall into the “preferred rate” range to get the life insurance coverage he needs to take care of his family. Needless to say, Joe is not happy about doing this, but he feels like he had no other choice. Listen in and Jimmy and Joe talk about this critical topic and invite YOUR input and personal experience about dealing with getting life and health insurance.

ScreenShot2013-08-04at61310PM_zps29451976 In today’s featured interview, we’ve got a rising star in the low-carb and Paleo communities with a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry and Physiology and a researcher into issues such as obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance named Dr. William “Bill” Lagakos, PhD from the “Calories Proper” blog. There’s been a lot of debate in recent years about the role calories play in nutrition which is what led Bill to write a simple little book entitled The Poor, Misunderstood Calorie to educate people on this subject that has been used to justify the promotion of a low-fat, high-carb diet. Check out this awesome conversation between Jimmy and Bill about the distinction between the definition of a calorie biochemically vs. nutritionally, the importance of the quality of calories consumed, the vital role that fats play in the diet, and so much more! The calorie apologists are gonna hate what Bill Lagakos has to share in this interview. Tune in to hear his defense of the reputation of the poor, misunderstood calorie. And don’t miss his upcoming appearance on the LIVE “Ask The Low-Carb Experts” podcast on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7PM ET taking on the topic “All Things Calories (Calories 201).”

  1. My husband and I had a similar issue with Health Insurance. His cholesterol was close to high and the bumped our health insurance double. We are self employed so it was all on us and we pay an extremely high rate for health insurance. It goes up every 6 months to a year or so. It is ridiculous.

  2. I am an insurance agent and also eat LCHF. One large company reviewed all of it’s death claims and found no connection between mortality and cholesterol. They don’t knock you out of the Preferred class until your total Cholesterol is well over 300.The company is Genworth Financial.

      1. That should be okay..They go to the mid 300’s before they ding the price up. Of course there are other health factors they take into consideration.
I would be happy to help you if you want. Let me know how to get in touch. I am licensed throughout the country.

      2. I just looked at the guidelines this morning. Two companies are more concerned with ratio than with total cholesterol. However the top total is 300. Ratio must be 4.5 for Men and 4.0 for Women.

Interestingly they will downgrade your class for C less than 150 due to cancer risk..So the Insurance companies are catching on. They should be lobbied more by our community. They are not under the influence of Big Pharma. Can you imagine the positive signal to the public if the Insurance companies promoted LCHF…? They do what works for them.. Show them the numbers and they will respond $$$

          1. There is no connection between Big Pharma and the insurance industry. That is why they are a ripe avenue for progress. If they can refine underwriting and have better success in predicting mortality or morbidity, that is all they care about.. I assure you
            .It’s all about the numbers.
I speak with insurance underwriters all the time about cholesterol and LCHF and they are keenly interested.

          2. Big Pharma does not fund the insurance industry. The Insurance indusdtry is as large or larger than Big Pharma. If you look at the assets of the insurance industry they do not need funding from big Pharma. That is not to say that to say that some are not on board with the Standard agenda. Also, I was referring to the Life Insurance Companies who seem to be moving in the right direction. Dismiss at your own folly. I think there is a great opening.
Big Pharma controls medicine. It does not control insurance.

          3. I’m not dismissing what you are saying and if it’s true they’re open to LCHF, then great. I’m just sharing the reality that many of these insurance companies are being HEAVILY marketed by the pharmaceutical $$$.

          4. They certainly are not funded by the pharmaceutical industry, Certainly not the Life Insurance companies. MetLife has total assets of 815 billion..Merck Pharmaceutical has assets of 106 billion just to give you some perspective.

          5. I’ve often said that it seems insurance companies should be on board with the LCHF message to lower the number of claims and keep costs under control. If they could flex some of that financial muscle to push for it, real change could happen. THANK YOU for your comments!

          6. No problem.. I would like to see people like Gary Taubes or Dr. Atta speak at Insurance meetings such as the Society of Actuaries. If the do flex their muscle it will be in their interest to do so. Win win..They would be a powerful and influential Allie, unexpected as it may be for some people..Thanks for listening
