On Dr. J. Renae Norton’s web site, she states: “Our mission is to provide a warm and safe environment where the individual with anorexia, bulimia, obesity or an emotional eating disorder, can get the help she needs to establish and/or restore healthy relationships.” These eating disorders have not been adequately treated in the proper customized, holistic manner for the individual as they should be which is why she has become so vested in helping people through her practice in Cincinnati, Ohio called Norton Center for Eating Disorders & Obesity. The “one-size-fits-all” approach for treating people with eating disorders is that much worse because it delays the healing process from beginning sooner than later. Listen in as Jimmy and Dr. Norton talk about the growing epidemic of eating disorders and what she does to help heal her patients from this.

  1. Aloha jimmy!
Nice to see Dr Norton on your show.

In my experience letting go of the grains completely is a great help, learning to use and keep different grains in the diet just does not seem to serve the client in the long run (great for titrating off but not for a regular part of the diet). It is much too easy to slip into the old habit!
I see this as a problem more now as it is evident that many of us (not just the eating disordered) cannot eat the same level of starches we could even a generation ago. We need to heed the wisdom of our bodies and find other foods to enjoy!

I so agree with Dr Norton regarding the increased prevalence of Purging Type Anorexia. Incredibly dangerous and difficult to treat and I have found working with the clients brain chemistry and using amino acid therapy to feed and rehabilitate their neurotransmitters makes diertary changes and talk therapy a much more positive experience.

Mahalo for letting me put my 2 cents in 🙂

    Aloha, Gina

  2. I witnessed something frightening. Friends adopted a Pacific Island girl as a baby (her birth mother was no doubt obese and likely diabetic) and now the little girl is about eight. Her mother has kept the child’s weight reasonably in check with serious dicipline. Whilst visiting us, mum walked out to see the cattle with her son and as soon as she had walked a bit away, the little girl dove into the back of the station wagon, knocked off the lid of the esky, ripped out a big pot of sweetened yogurt and began eating voraciously.
I have only seen that rabid behaviour whilst feeding our pigs. I hope our friends can get on top of the problem soon.
