Health blogger, entrepreneur and personal biohacker Dave Asprey is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

[podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/llvlcshow/LLVLC-ep-569-dave-asprey.mp3[/podcast]

You’ve probably already heard about Dave but you know him better as “The Bulletproof Executive” and the man behind “Bulletproof Coffee” which uses butter to create a powerful morning cup of joe. But there’s so much more to this man of mystery than meets the eye. Dave could have just as easily called his web site “The Counterintuitive Executive” because virtually everything he has seen happening to his own body through $250,000 worth of experiments and tests over a 15-year period have trumped what conventional wisdom says is supposed to happen. He lost over 100 pounds consuming 4500 calories a day and no exercise. He increased his IQ by more than 20 points. He conditioned his body to thrive on less than four hours of sleep at night. He discovered what it takes to be focused and ready for any situation in just one week. All of this sounds like a late-night informercial ad for some new supplement product, but it’s just Dave Aspry sharing what he does best–the lessons he has learned along the way (which includes healthy low-carb Paleo living, by the way!) to help others discover more about themselves as well. ENJOY this enlightening interview!

    1. Not yet…I’m not a coffee drinker and I don’t have a coffee maker in my house. I hate to buy one just to try this stuff, but I’m tempted to get one because I’ve only heard good stuff about this. I’ve got the coffee and Kerrygold ready to go…just need a way to make it, Robin. 😀

  1. Jimmy,
Really enjoyed Dave’s interview! So much great info…. Exciting to hear that he now lives here on Vancouver Island B.C. Canada as I live in Victoria, the Capital. Will look forward to seeing/ and hearing him speak in my area in the future.
I am also going to look into the bullet proof coffee and taking the raw honey @  nite for sleep.
    You are Awesome Jimmy!!!
    Nina B.

  2. This was a great interview.  I like that Dave’s focus seems to be on optimization, as opposed to others who who simply say, “Carbs per se aren’t a problem,” or those who are constantly looking for the upper limit of fructose tolerance.

Regarding “brain training,” the dual n-back test is fun and mentally draining, as it requires strong focus.  There are other things that seem to have general mental benefits, like Tetris for example, but a plateau may be reached quickly for smart/quick people.  Also, regarding creativity, there are books from the 1960s about the “practicing creativity” using a method called synectics.

I like to use my chess rating/record as a marker for cognitive performance, since it’s a bit more forgiving/relaxing (online games at least) than the dual n-back test, where any tiny loss of focus (watching out for your boss to walk by your computer) will ruin your performance. I think there is definitely something helpful with regards to high calorie from fat. I suspect it is both ketones and the higher metabolic rate/temperature from calories.

    1. I love Tetris and other games like that. I also love word games…helps keep me sharp and a great stress relief, too.

  3. Jimmy or anyone else, would there be a different effect to blood sugar with the 3 t. honey at night to help sleep. Would like to try but REAL hesitant. Thoughts?

Now Jimmy you told Dave you would try the coffee. Just borrow a pot from a friend. You’ve got a gazillion who’d like to try it with you.  🙂

    1. Philis, I don’t know if the blood sugar response to the raw honey would be offset by the good you would get from the sleep or not. Dave did say it wouldn’t kick you out of ketosis which seems odd. I too am hesitant about trying it.

As for the coffee, I’ll try it very soon. I’m just not a coffee fan…but I do need to get some made sometime. 😀

  4. If something is “less good for you” and you’re seeking to be optimally healthy, wouldn’t you do what you can to get your hands on the better meats? Yes, it’s slightly higher in price, but it’s so worth it. Most farmers are willing to work with you on the price if you buy enough of their meat. I get my grassfed ground beef for about $4/pound from my local farmer. LOVE IT! If it’s a priority in your life, then you’ll make sacrifices in other areas to get this quality stuff.
