Within the low-carb community, there are people who take on various roles in helping to spread the healthy message of carbohydrate-restriction. There are the torchbearers who put themselves on the front lines of the battle through blogs and podcasts discussing the various topics of the day. Additionally, there are people who work within their inner spheres of influence telling friends and family members about the changes they have experienced through low-carb living. But today’s podcast guest is what I like to refer to as a “thinker” who seriously ponders the thoughts and ideas that make up the core of what we believe.
He is Adam Kosloff and you might recall I interviewed him previously in Episode 355 and shared about his 2011 e-book The Low-Carber’s Survival Guide. Well he’s back in 2012 with a brand new e-book he’s calling Beyond Caloriegate that delves even deeper into a concept he calls the “Black Box.” As long as calories in, calories out dominates the discussion of nutrition and health we will never move beyond the same old predictable results we are seeing now. Listen in as Jimmy and Adam talk about this and so much more in a rather thought-provoking podcast.

Hmmm… I may have to listen to this one a few times! I’ve read Adam’s free ebook too and still I’m a bit confused by what the “black box” means. I think overall he wants to encourage people to re-think “calories in, calories out” which is great, but I worry that if presented in a somewhat confusing manner they won’t try to understand and just dismiss it and go back to it because it is such a simple theory. I still applaud Adam’s work though- he’s clearly passionate about what he believes in and our movement could always use people like that! 🙂
Sorry the black box just sounds really stupid. Over storing caused by over eating. Calories matter. Your comments about Evelym were condescending.
You’re foolish if you don’t think calories matter which is the primary thesis of black box as far as I can tell. You’re denying the basic laws of thermodynamics. Eat 5000 calories a day of any macro-nutrient and you will gain fat (unless you’re Michael Phelps). Adam tried to answer this at 22:15 and came up sounding like he had no idea. I’d suggest you try it Adam.
Unless your body changes when you overfeed it, which is what happens to some people. Their metabolism speeds up and just burns through the extra calories. Also, the human body isn’t a car engine. It will use some fat and protein calories to repair cells or build muscle or create hormones or for probably a thousand other things that nobody really knows about yet. It isn’t a simple matter of ‘burning’ calories.
Keep your head up, Jimmy. Don’t let critics like CarbSane get you down. You have millions of fans – and remember this: ALL the great men of history were persecuted for their beliefs at one time or another. Just look at the Old Testament prophets. Heck, look at Jesus… The darkest hour has always been just before the dawn, and that dawn WILL come. Godspeed…
Oh my god BernardW you are a wally – comparing Jimmy to Jesus and other great men of history!
A lot of bad men of history were also persecuted for their beliefs so you may want to be careful with your analogies there, Bernard…
(Not at all saying Jimmy is a bad man, just pointing out the fallacy that the amount of opposition one receives for his or her views somehow proves the validity of said views.)
Why we over store is the issue….the reasons many. Thanks Adam! (And hat tip to Jimmy for being the ever faithful pod-caster bringing us to our senses!)
THANKS for being a dedicated listener, Gina! 😀
