Holistic psychiatrist and certified GAPS practitioner Dr. Judy Tsafrir is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Dr. Tsafrir is one of the most enthusiastic fans of the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) protocol as outlined by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. Jimmy has been working on getting an interview with Dr. Campbell-McBride for a while (and he’s still pursuing it!), but he found Dr. Tsafrir’s dedication to and implementation of these principles in her own practice as a great reason to have her come on the show to talk about it.

The focus of this nutritional plan for treating a wide variety of mental disorders like autism, depression, mood disorders, psychotic disorders, learning disabilities, dyslexia, dyspraxia and more is on the consumption of real, whole foods that restore gut health to bring everything into proper balance again in the body. As you can imagine, Dr. Tsafrir is a great fan of traditional diets as espoused by The Weston A. Price Foundation, the evolutionary principles of the Paleo diet, and a healthy high-fat (especially saturated fat), moderate protein, low-carb diet for the best health you can possibly attain. Her ultimate goal is to heal all of her patients through the therapeutic use of natural dietary and detoxification steps. She’s doing just that through her medical practice in Newton, Massachusetts!

  1. Wow now you are in my playground!

I loved that you and Dr Judy Tsarir talked about *foods and feelings*. I have to say I think there are a lot of people out there (myself included) who are working with clients in this manner. Perhaps it is the preponderance of eating disordered clients I see that has caused me to have a deeper relationship with all clients but I cannot imagine only changing their diet…actually most of where we make changes is in their relationship with food and oh so much changes from there quite organically!

I am not a psychoanalyst yet I do work with my clients therapists. Many of my sessions with clients do revolve around their feelings because we cannot divide the wellness of the client up into different parts (lets be very careful in the nutritional world about not doing this). They come to me for nutrition and I need to know a lot more about them then some lab numbers or a diagnosis to even get started. Probably how I got to be know by some of my clients as the food and feeling coach!

I am so glad to see Dr Judy Tsafrir taking the nutritional approach (GAPS) and hope her peers take notice as this is the way, not of the future -as some of us have been beating this drum for a long time -but the time is ripe and perhaps the term is the tipping point is near and they may be left behind.

You Jimmy have to take a lot of credit as you have the most interesting array of guests for us to feast on! Mahalo yet again!

    1. Gina, THANK YOU! I am always amazed by the passion of the people in this community and it never seems to run short…means you’re stuck with me for a few more years. πŸ˜€

By the way, we should have YOU on my “Low-Carb Conversations” podcast sometime. Email me your Skype username to livinlowcarbman@charter.net if you’re interested.

  2. This is a bit unrelated to this particular podcast Jimmy, so I apologize, but I was listening to your interview with Mat Lalonde yesterday (archive is a beautiful thing !) and the potencial podcast with Dr. Alessio Fasano (The celiac researcher) was mentioned. I wonder what ever happened to that plan ?

    1. THANK Mik! Oh, I have potential interviews with a lot of people…sometimes they just haven’t worked out for a variety of reasons. There are so many people who DO want to be on the show that I sometimes don’t fret about the ones who don’t. πŸ™‚

  3. Hi. On the subject of eating animal fats for better mood, when I drink 3% fat milk and whole cheese or yogurt I notice increase sebum in skin. Which fat could I add (appart from Omega 3 fish oil)? Thanks.
