Iowa City, IA-based professor of medicine and clinical researcher Dr. Terry Wahls who survived progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) through therapeutic use of the Paleo diet is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore!
Dr. Wahls has come on the scene with a bang ever since her November 2011 TEDx Iowa City lecture “Minding Your Mitochondria” went viral on YouTube garnering a quarter million views and counting! She explains how she was diagnosed with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis in 2000 that forced her into a wheelchair and left her with no easy answers with what to do about her rapidly declining health. But after traditional medicine failed to provide the much-needed treatment for her MS, Dr. Wahls decided to research everything she could get her hands on about this and was led to the Paleo diet. Today, while still not 100% better from her debilitating disease, she engages in regular bicycle rides and leads an active and healthy life.
She outlined much of what she has learned about the relationship between the right kind of diet and disease control in her book Minding Your Mitochondria and is currently seeking a publisher in 2012 to help spread her message to an even wider audience in her book tentatively-titled Up From The Chair: Defeating Progressive MS Without Drugs. With everything she has been able to overcome in her life since that fateful MS diagnosis in 2000 left her seemingly hopeless, it’s unimaginable that anything could stand the way of Dr. Wahls achieving whatever she desires in her life!
This is truly one of the most extraordinary and inspiring stories of health triumph you will ever hear and we are privileged to have her here today on “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show.” If you haven’t seen the infamous YouTube video that has been reposted on blogs and in the social media featuring Dr. Terry Wahls yet, then watch it here:

Incredible Interview. Can’t wait to show my friend who has MS the YouTube video. Also saw the book on Amazon and the 28 out of 29 readers who gave it 5 stars!
It’s quite a story.
Woohoo! Awesome interview that I have been waiting for. I am so happy to have heroes again! Dr. Wahls is an incredible woman, I am so thankful to her for making such a great effort to let people with MS know that there is real hope. Real hope! Thank you too Jimmy for having such a great podcast. Great interview. I am someone who has used the autoimmune protocol of paleo to reverse my MS. I talk about it all the time and having a Dr. who has made such a motivational recovery has crazy power. To be able to refer people to a book a DR wrote has major power. Thanks again to both Jimmy Moore and Dr. Wahls for providing inspiration.
I told Dr. Wahls about YOU before the interview, Whitney, and she was excited to see a layperson get excited about this. Kudos to you! Can’t wait to share your story on “Low-Carb Conversations” next Friday!
I love referring this interview to people. That is so cool to think that you told her about me. I am looking forward to Friday, my gym told me they would devote a post to it that day. Their site gets like 50k hits a day from all over the world. A lot of military. Have a great night, Jimmy.
Awesome interview. If we can get some publications on MS and the many other auto-immune and other health issues that are reversed (at least, anecdotally) on a paleo diet then maybe the world will start taking this seriously. It is so hard to be in the KNOW about a wonderful key to health and yet not have it taken seriously by my family and friends, let alone the mainstream world. It’s just so hard to know that so many people are suffering unecessarily because the medical establishment takes what the USDA says so seriously, even though the USDA clearly has some biases. It’s one thing to have a diet that helps people lose weight and control their diabetes and heart disease, which Ornish and others can also do to some extent. It’s another to be able to basically “cure” these other diseases that the medical establishment only can give drugs for the symptoms of and never do anything to tackle the real causes.
THANKS JIMMY FOR YOUR EFFORTS!
Dr. Wahls is doing her part.
Terry and Jimmy, I am lost for words, which doesn’t happen to me often. Wonderful interview. Stephanie, I know exactly how you feel. I will have to be content to do my best to be a good example and one day others might take notice. Looking forward to hearing Whitney’s story. Got to go and find more tissues. J
It’s a moving story, Jill. So glad I got to share it with you guys.
