UK-based Paleo physician Dr. Sarah Myhill and psychology professor and bestselling author of The Shangri-La Diet Seth Roberts join us today for a fantastic episode of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Dr. Myhill is acutely aware of the diseases of modern man and the unmistakable correlation of the 21st Century diet that is exacerbating the problem. She’s helping her patients and the people of Great Britain realize that they are eating way too many carbohydrates and not enough healthy saturated fats in their diet. She’s a champion for a low-carb Paleo nutritional approach that is helping people radically change their health for the better.

We also hear from a psychology professor named Seth Roberts who wrote an unconventional book on diet and health called The Shangri-La Diet which mixes his background in psychology with an acute interest in human behaviors about food. The result is one of the most bizarre yet incredibly thought-provoking conversations Jimmy has ever had with a guest. You’ll hear the incredulity in Jimmy’s voice as he speaks with Seth and yet an inquisitiveness about looking further into the plausibility that these methods he talks about actually work. Tune in to see what the fuss is all about!

  1. I can’t help but think that Mr. Roberts’ idea COULD be dangerous for some folks who’d choose sugar water as their empty calories.  I’d never want to trade a thinner body for higher blood sugars and its terribly damaging effects on every aspect of our physiology.

  2. Seth’s extra light olive oil method works incredibly well for some people.  I’ve never been so un-hungry in my life.  It helped me get my weight down and now I use it to get a grip when I start eating too many carbs and the never ending hunger/craving cycle sets in.  I know it is strange when you first hear it, but if you do it right (no flavors 1hr. before or after oil,not even toothpaste or a tic-tac) it works for a lot of people.  My blood sugar is too reactive to use the sugar water method.

    1. Same reaction! On my way home from work I know if I’ll need to rein in my out-of-control appetite (or boredom? emotions? hormones?) and have a couple tablespoons nose-clipped oil. If I don’t, I’ll start tearing the refrigerator & pantry apart eating everything in site. Yeah, I’m still eating healthy when I binge but I can’t seem to stop.

How I feel on the oil reminds me of the first few months of going low-carb about 8 years ago when I cut out high carb, flavorful processed foods. So what Todd Becker said above REALLY makes sense. I had assumed Roberts and Guyenet were both about the Food Reward, but the Flavor Familiarity/Conditioning seems to resonate more with my situation.

Whatever the mechanism, it is miraculous to me!I’ve also had great luck with Walnut Oil. Organic, cold pressed, omega 3’s. And had some success with Chia seeds. I’m also curious about using my lemon flavored Carlson’s fish oil with a nose clip. It’s just so durned aromatic.

Mountain Rose Herbs has lots of good oils for experimenting.

Going to try the butter this week to see if it super-charges my brain.

Oh – and Sarah Myhill rocks! I’m on my 3rd listen. Her wiki-site is amazing.

Thank you, thank you Jimmy, for two more fantastic interviews. You are the best!

–From another Lisa who could have written this EXACT post.

P.S. If you give Olive Oil a try, use extra light olive oil unless you clip your nose. Virgin Olive Oil has a definite flavor so if you use that, clip your nose and back it with a lot of water to clear out any taste.

  3. about 27 minutes into the interview Dr. Myhill receommends to use something that sounds like “shawnering” to help get toxins out of the body fat when starting a low carb diet.  What is this?

  4. I first learned about Seth Roberts and his ideas regarding nutrition from his AHS talk, and his discussion of the effect of consuming large quantities of butter every day on his mental functioning. After listening to his talk I decided to do the same thing for myself, because I had stopped consuming all dairy a few years ago due to health concerns. After the very first time I consumed a large amount of butter at one time (about half a stick), a few hours later it felt like my brain was functioning at a much higher level. I was speed reading articles online like I didn’t know I was capable of. This effect occurs every time I consume moderate to large amounts of butter, so I don’t know what in the butter causes it or why, but I am very grateful to Seth for making me aware of this effect. Anyone who wants a more functional brain should try this – it can’t hurt and it tastes great.

  5. I appreciate that you did question some of the claims Seth Roberts made, rather than letting every claim he made.

  6. The oil approach sounds similar to ,Perfect Health Diet, Paul Jaminet’s advice to stay in autophagy fast with coconut oil or you can use extra virgin olive oil too.

I wonder if this sugar water or oil is successful because it is a form of food reward theory that Guyenet has talked about so much.

  7. Seth Roberts is a genius because he sees connections where nobody else was looking.  His observations about the connection between flavor conditioning and appetite led him to discover new ways of losing weight. I tried the Shangri-La Diet (the oil version and nose pinching) several years ago and it works.  Check out his forum and you’ll find hundreds of people who lost a lot of weight this way.

Stephan Guyenet’s food reward theory is entirely different because it ignores the role of conditioning.  Guyenet takes certain foods and flavors as inherently rewarding, whereas Roberts’ pinpointed the importance of flavor familiarity and conditioning.  I think the role of flavor and other environmental triggers is as important to diet and obesity as is the macronutrient content. Both factors work via hormone signalling to control appetite.

Roberts’ observations about the importance of conditioned response were the basis for my Deconditioning Diet.  It is surprisingly easy to change the way your brain and hormones respond to food.  Once you realize this, you are freed from the need to be so careful about the carbohydrate content or flavor of foods
