Examine.com’s Kurtis Frank and Nutritionist Darlene Kvist are our guests today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!
Listen in as Jimmy speaks briefly with 21-year old college student Kurtis Frank who works with a brand new web site called Examine.com where people post information about nutritional and fitness supplements–much in the style of Wikipedia. The difference is that Examine.com checks to make sure all information is accurate. In addition to this, he maintains the SilverHydra blog as well as attending college! Listen in as he and Jimmy talk about what’s trendy, useful or overrated in the field of health and fitness supplements.
In today’s primary interview, we hear from a delightful woman named Darlene Kvist from Nutritional Weight and Wellness and host of the weekly radio program called Dishing Up Nutrition. She’s been spreading the gospel of healthy low-carb nutrition on the airwaves for seven years and has recently landed a position on the Board of Dietetics and Nutrition Practice for the state of Minnesota where she can hopefully help instigate some changes in perception and policy about carbohydrate restriction! Listen in as she and Jimmy talk about all this plus her work as a Psycho-Nutritional Consultant in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area.
Special thanks to our sponsor, Quest Bars! Listen in for details on how you can become a special LLVLC guest courtesy of Quest Bars!

I think it is difficult for a 21 year old to be an expert on everything. His personal beliefs on strength training and especially his thoughts on super slow training cannot be taken as expert opinion. There are others who have clinical or practical experience with super slow for longer than Kutis’ life who may have better informed opinions on that topic.
I like the Examine.com web site which was the main reason I had him on my show. THANKS for the feedback, Jamie!
Please understand that I am a dietetic student and supplement researcher when it comes to academic. The complaints you have are both physiology related, of which I have minimal clinical and research experience in. Most of what I learned for physiology comes from personal experience in the gym and my (albeit limited) experience with clients.
I will gladly say that my thoughts on exercise should be taken with a grain of salt.
However, please do not say that you find it difficult for a 21 year old to be an expert on anything. Please look at the science and arguments I bring forth before you judge my intellect in such a manner due to nothing but my age and something I mentioned outside of my speciality.
Age does not denote wisdom or intelligence. To dismiss him simply because of his age just shows that you are simply uncomfortable with the fact that someone is likely younger and much smarter than you.
Also, he deadlifts 515×3, how much do you deadlift?
@Herman, Neither does age CONFER wisdom & intelligence, a fact of which you are a prime example. To come to his defense simply because of his age just shows that you are completely impressed with the fact that someone likely younger than you is also much smarter than you. Compared to the contributions of the other two “editors” at Examine.com you’re just a posing slacker.
So he can read, post & point people to studies & various resources? Big whoop-de-doo.
So he can deadlift 515×3, big whoop-de-doo. He’s only 3 years past 18, he SHOULD be able to, if he can still do that 20, 30 or 40 years from now THEN I’ll be impressed.
Does being able to lift that weight make up for his lack of 20 years experience at *anything* besides just being alive? No, again you are just too easily entertained & impressed.
I agree with what Dr. Greg Ellis says at the 20:30 minute mark of Jimmy’s Episode #461 podcast with him: “The cost of entry to making yourself an instant expert in anything is ZERO, all you need is a website.”
Jamie if you were a little more familiar with Mr. Frank’s knowledge base and area of expertise, you would understand that he does not take the stance of an expert on training. His strengths lie in his field of study. As for the reference to his age, you should be reminded that age does not always imply wisdom. Excellent interview and best of luck to Kurtis Frank!
I really bonded with Darlene…She was great. I will check out the supplement website too.
Thanks!
She was amazing! And I had a fun time being on her podcast on Saturday…link coming soon!
I really enjoyed the interview with Dar Kvist. I’m looking forward to listening to her show on iTunes. I hope with her new position she’ll be able to open the eyes of some of her colleagues in Minnesota to healthy low carb eating.
I think she will.
Sad you use Quest bars as an advertiser and that you choose to promote their products when they use Splenda, a dangerous artificial sweetner. They would not have the “Dar-stamp of approval”; her podcast is where I learned your name/blog. Maybe there is more you can learn from her podcasts…she has taught so many of us in the
Twin Cities, so much!!!
Thanks so much for your comments. Quest Bars is currently working on a version of their bar that does NOT contain Splenda in them thanks to my personal request that they make their bars without this artificial sweetener. I’m not a purist about low-carb living, but I do believe in pursuing the very best quality real food ingredients as much as possible. THANKS for finding my show, Elizabeth! I think you’ll find Dar and I have a lot more in common than you think. 🙂
Kurtis Frank and Darlene Kvist both are good Nutritionist and dietitians. i like their advices because it works.
Once again Jimmy great podcast, I just got to this one. It was awesome that you interviewed Kurtis. That guy is very sharp. You have the greatest guests ever. Thanks
