  1. Jimmy,

This was another great podcast. It is interesting that you brought on Dr. Larry McCleary, a neurosurgeon, who sees a connection between dietary habits and brain health, because in the past few years a psychiatrist by the name of Dr. Daniel Amen has gained much popularity, through his hour long specials on PBS, where he lectures about the diet’s effect on brain health. In fact he has a bestselling book entitled “Change Your Brain, Change Your Body”, where he elucidates the correlation between nutrition, brain function, and overall health. Though he is somewhat partial to the conventional wisdom, which promotes the misguided notions of “heart healthy whole grains” and the “evils of saturated fat”, he does demonize sugar and refine carbohydrates. So in some sense, though he is not an overt low carb advocate, in the final analysis he does abide by some core low carb principles.

The fact that I see Dr. Amen’s specials on PBS almost every month tells me that the low carb message, in some form, is reaching the masses more and more. Granted many doctors, like Dr. Amen and Dr. McClearly, may differ with each other on how much carbohydrate one needs, and if there is any point in distinguishing between good and bad carbs, but at least that is a start.

  2. Spectacular interview! I’ve read all of Larry’s books and have found lots of great information. Being an ApoE4/4 genotype, the topic of brain health is especially important to me. It is nice to hear a neurosurgeon promoting low carb and foods like eggs, butter & coconut oil. Although the topic of apo E genotype was not discussed in this podcast, I’d love to ask Larry if he would recommend the same program for a 4/4 genotype. I’ve been told to avoid all of these sources of saturated fat from the cardiac world since 4/4’s are ‘hyper-absorbers’ and have astronomical sd LDL. No more than 20 grams per day of SF, is this solid advise? Heart disease and AD run in my immediate family… as you can imagine with my genotype.

  3. Thank you Jimmy and Dr McCleary. I recently went to the supermarket at 8am. Bad idea. I was over run by zillions of high school students. I’m assuming they were buying “breakfast” – soft drink, bags of “I’m not sure what” and icecream. I asked the check out lady if any of them ever bought healthy food. She thought for a while and said, well, there was one…

  4. Dr. Larry cracks me up! Oooh, I’m gonna eat some more fat, namely butter. You mentioned margarine I don’t care how healthy margarine is, I am not even interested in using it.THe only reason margarine exists is because it is supposed to be a healthy alternative to butter. Coconut oil is also a big part of my diet.I just read about Axona today as a treatment for alzheimers. My babies, I must say, were not fed ideally. If I had it to do all over again, I would have eaten more eggs and liver. I would have eaten less bread and potatoes.I would have consumed more butter and coconut oil. AND I would puch the nurse in the nose that gives them a bottle of sugar water.

Jimmy you are indeed inspirational as Dr. Mac says. He is also inspirational with his doctor knowledge that agrees with mine 😉
THanks for this and all of your podcasts.

    Mary
