Mat Lalonde, research biochemist with a Harvard PhD and an intense interest in Paleo nutrition and CrossFit fitness, is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.
Mat has been a frequently requested guest and we’re proud to finally bring him to you today. He has taken a hard look at the accepted science of the low-fat theory of weight loss and found it lacking in some very fundamental ways. Listen in as he shares where he agrees and disagrees with such luminaries as Dr. Loren Cordain and Gary Taubes and the very strict scientific rigor by which he benchmarks all nutritional approaches. This is a can’t miss episode!
Please excuse some audio difficulties we encountered during this episode.

Excellent interview. Have been waiting for this one. The nutritional seminar on Matt’s web site is fantastic if anyone is on the fence about watching it.
THANKS for your feedback, Steven! Mat’s a really cool guy with some outstanding philosophies people need to pay attention to.
Thanks Jimmie! I don’t know what my problem was – oh I have two kids. I Think I’ll buy myself this for Thanksgiving!
Keep on keeping on – you make a real difference in people’s lives!
How does one download that seminar? Is it free? I can’t seem to navigate to it on his site?
THANKS Meredith! The Nutritional Seminar from Mat is not free and can be purchased through PayPal at the bottom of this page. Hope this helps!
Thanks a lot Jimmy,
one of my favourites!!! 🙂
Mat reminded me a LOT of Robb Wolf….outstanding stuff! THANKS for listening!
A great podcast, Jimmy. I have noticed a problem with fructose (even berries…darn)and Mat’s explanation tweaked my “geek”
I found your site as Robb Wolf mentions you and I look forward to your podcasts each week. You rock, Jimmy!
THANKS Penny! Mat does have a way of putting complex concepts into easy-to-understand language. So glad you “found” me.
Great interview!
GREAT!!!!!!!
Everything is in there.
Thanks Jimmy, this one is in my top ten for sure
Do you know the correct spelling of the doctor Mat mentioned at the Medical School in MD? Silvano? Savano?
Thanks
I don’t know…maybe Mat Lalonde will chime in.
Great interview with a guy who understands the impact of sweets and lectins on the digestive and metabolic pathways. I had trouble with the audio. I think the Maryland doctor in question is Dr. Alessio Fasano. He discovered zonulin, the chemical which responds to wheat ingestion by making the intestine walls porous.
Here’s Fasano’s Scientific American article:

Jimmy, In your Lalonde interview you said you need to contact Dr. Fasano for a podcast interview. Now you don’t remember who Lalonde was talking about. Back in April of this year I recommended Dr. Fasano to you as a podcast guest.

You even responded to my post.
Here’s an idea, Jimmy. Why don’t you interview Dr. Fasano for a podcast? Here’s his UMD directory listing:

I understand about work priorities. The Fasano interview really should become a priority. You’ll discover why if you give it a look. Dr. Lalonde knows what he’s talking about.
Jimmy,
This one was great! I’ve been waiting since I heard you were having Mat on and is was definitely worth it!
THANKS Ricky! I agree he was well worth the wait. 😀
All this is a little more than I wanted to know, but what the heck, learning something new is great. Thanks.
Great as always Jimmy- I really enjoy how you give your guests space to expand their thoughts. It makes for very interesting an informative listening.
I don’t know if this is on my end or not but when I use Stitcher to listen, your voice quality is always awful. On this podcast it had a really strong echo. With a host more in love with his own voice this would be a real problem but your guests always sound fine. They usually do most of the talking so it still works well enough.

Good interview, but as Karl says, you really need to get the audio quality up. It’s painful trying to listen whenever you’re talking. If both you and your guests wore headset mics almost all the audio problems would disappear.
We had Mat present his nutrition seminar in our gym. Amazing. I appreciated Mat’s attention to detail. It really allowed me to geek out on the whys Paleo nutrition.
Hi Jimmy, Great interview. Again a guy that thinks very much like me (with the exception of his views on patatoes and dairy 🙂 ). If you keep launching people like this, I can shut down my CutTheCarb blog. VBR Hans
Excellent interview Jimmy, one of the best. Your questions were spot on as well. Lalonde sounded really critical and non-BS, extremely inspirating.
Just having listened your podcasts about nonstop for several weeks via ipod, I just can’t wait for new ones.
^ Agreed on getting Fasano next into the show, his research on gluten is gobsmacking.
Oh and talking about guests, I know you don’t personally care about intermittent fasting, but you NEED to get Krista Varady on your show ! The alternate day fasting queen !
By the way, is my finnish friend Christer Sundqvist coming soon on air ? I understand he was interviewed months ago.
Keep up the great work, I love how diligently you do your homework and ask just the right questions !
Great interview… but the echo was borderline unbearable. (You may wish to look into what’s causing this. It occurs on many of your other interviews as well).
Already resolved it. Thanks for listening.
