I wish I could get my work to have her come teach them some things about nutrition. The Trans Fat and labeling comments reminded me of our coffee creamer out work supplies to its employees. The label says it has 0g fat (0 trans also), 1g of carbs, and 10 calories. 1g of carbs = 4 calories, not 10. The 1st ingredient listed is corn syrup solids (processed sugar), and the 2nd ingredient is partially hygrogenated soybean oil… If you take the 1.4999g of carbs that are in there (rounded down to 1 on the label), and multiply by 4, you get about 6 calories (5.999). And if you take the 0.4999g of trans fat in there (rounded down to 0 on the label) and multiply it by 9, you get about 4.5 calories (4.499), for a total of 10.49 calories, which is rounded down to the 10 calories that the label shows. So the people who use it are actually getting 1.5g of sugar, and .5g of trans fat in each teaspoon, and most people shake the creamer vigorously in their coffee and use a whole lot more. People are astounded and disturbed when I point out that info to them…
Mical,
The coffee creamers in the company break rooms frequently end up in my workshops. After people take 30 seconds to actually *read* the ingredient paragraph, they definitely become “astounded and disturbed.”
They start to realize what you just spelled out above. It never occurred to them they were drinking HFCS and partially hydrogenated oils every morning. They assumed they were drinking something “healthy”.
Thanks for listening and commenting!
