Hello and welcome back to The Livinโ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!
Today, Jimmy shares his interview with health food entrepreneur Ruth Shamai. Ruth is a former vegetarian and Canadian agriculture law activist. Through her efforts, along with others, Canada reversed its policy of not allowing hemp to be grown as a commercial crop. Hemp–not the same as marijuana–in seed form, is extremely nutritious, and after the legal change in her country, she decided to start a company marketing this wonderfood alongside another excellent seed: Chia!
Listen in to learn about the amazing complement of nutrients and omega-3 fats available from these seeds and why hemp is not marijuana and completely safe to consume. Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about the health benefits of hemp and chia seeds is discussed in this excitingly informative interview!

Not on iTunes?
Working on it, Rob! Apple is doing some funky stuff lately. They never posted my interview with Holly Hickman yet either. If we knew how to get in their good graces, then every single episode would be on iTunes right now. It’s VERY frustrating for us.
I have a bit of a bone to pick (no pun intended) with one thing Ruth said about eating meat. She said that there isn’t enough land for animals to be raised on pasture if we all continue to consume beef as often as we do. I disagree. If the land that was used to make the corn that feeds these animals in factory farms was used as pasture, there would be enough land. 100 years ago, most people consumed large amounts of pastured meet and there was plenty to go around. We need to stop the mono-croping of corn and soy. That land could be better used raising animals on pasture and growing varried crops organically.
That’s an interesting point, Kim, and you’re right. We wouldn’t need all that land where we produce grains right now and it would be the perfect place for cattle to grow. NICE THINKING!
It’s there now ๐
Yeah, Apple is weird – I subscribe to other podcasts that have 3 or more years worth online but they can’t manage to get yours up. Should we start a conspiracy theory? LOL
On the other hand, the population has exploded over the last 100 years also. ๐
great guest… seeds and EFA’S are extremely important. Like Ruth I pursued macrobiotics and veganism…did not work, for reasons stated here all the time. The herds of cattle and buffalo in my homestate of New Mex are FREE RANGE, and there is plenty of room… if we all insist on free range meats… then WE, our votes (as dollars) would change the ugly meat industry. good show as always.
A recent post by Stanley A. Fishman shows that you can produce alot more if you do smart farming. http://www.tendergrassfedmeat.com/2010/07/13/a-better-sustainable-way-to-farm/
Millions of children die needlessly from starvation the world over while we burn 10% ethanol(corn alcohol) in our cars and lawnmowers and recreation vehicles and watch them die. — We are largely ignored and called godless "bleeding liberals" when we try to point this out. The pathological rule and they rule with an iron fist that favors their own personal wealth. We allow this and are no better ourselves because of it.
I don't care for the taste of either hemp or chia. Chia has a kind of bland psyllium-like flavor to it and has a dry sawdust texture. Hemp has a slight dirt/nut flavor to it, but it's hard to get by the greenish gray color of the hemp protein powder in smoothies! I formerly ate hemp and chia a few years back before I knew much about avoiding food sources of omega 6. There are better 'performed" sources of omega 3, such as fish oil. Fish oil needs no conversion during digetion….and it is not a source of 0-6.
