Hello and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Today is a very special episode as Jimmy introduces you to two great organizations both dedicated to advocating and spreading the science behind healthy, low-carb lifestyle. First up is an interview with Jeff Clinger, a representative of Innovative Metabolic Solutions. IMS may be best known to you due to the involvement of our good friends and frequent podcast interview guests Dr. Mary C. Vernon, Gary Taubes, and Dr. Eric Westman.

Next up is Jimmy’s conversation with Laurie Cagnassola, the workhorse behind the scenes of The Nutrition & Metabolism Society. This group has a board of advisors packed with the luminary MDs from the low-carb world, including its founder Dr. Richard Feinman as well as Dr. Richard Bernstein and many others whose names are well known to our listeners! Get to know more about the great work NMS is doing, too!

  1. I especially liked Laurie Cagnassola’s ‘story’ about how she came to low-carb eating. And her persistence in asking questions paid off when she had that ‘AHA’ moment. What she discovered finally gave me that missing piece to clear up my own confusion.

Ever since I stopped eating like a vegan (starch based McDougall) I kept asking how is it that McDougall/Barnard/Fuhrmann/Ornish, etc. all have their own success stories which prove that their diet works. They have successfully gotten people off their heart and diabetes medication on a high carb diet which here everyone says is ‘poison’.

So when I heard Laurie say that Dr. Feinstein told her it is the high FAT along with a high CARB diet that is so deleterious…I finally got it. Unfortunately, the scientific studies usually don’t bring that out.

I remembered that when I was doing McDougall (which is starch based vegan) they warned me if I got above that 10% fat limit the fat would ‘clog’ up my cell receptors and make my insulin resistance worse.

Thank you again Jimmy for a great interview!

  2. Jimmy! What a great interview! When I listened to Laurie talk about how angry she was that information had been withheld from her, and from all of us, it made me angry, too!

The frustrating thing is it seems there is nothing we can do about it. I know we each can do a small part by telling one person, but I know people with diabetes and metabolic syndrome, and they “know” that what their doctor is telling them is true, and why should they believe me?

I recently spent a day and a half with an insulin-shooting diabetic, and watched as she ate a lot of candy and then adjusted her insulin to make up for it.

What can we do as individuals, Jimmy? Why should people believe us over their trusted doctors?
