ep-315

Hello and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

In today’s episode, Jimmy speaks with author and low-carb weight loss success story Doug Varrieur. In this interview, Doug shares the personal low-carb nutritional philosophy behind his loss (a controversial one in some low-carb circles) and talks about his favorite healthy fruits and vegetables (Jicama, anyone?).

Be sure to catch the interaction when Jimmy “grills” Doug on his saturated fat avoidance. But have no fear, they both acknowledge the one, true bad fat: trans fats.

All this, the upcoming holiday schedule and more in today’s episode! And to all our Jewish listeners: Remember that Friday is the last day to try “Cauliflatkes!”

  1. I looked at his site after listening to your interview and saw the recipe for Strawberry Mousse using a cup of heavy cream. I guess that must be a “good fat.” *wink*

  2. Ok, I have to churp in on this interview. Overall, it was a fantastic podcast, however I did find few points intresting. But the most intresting point was his assertion about saturated fat. With all due respect to all low carb activists, there is still great deal of debate on saturated fat. Jimmy, I have seen it with my own eyes people bodies after heart attack demise. It is not a pretty scene. The coronary vessels are filled up with lots of cholesterol. Not all plaques are cholesterol based, some are calcified deposits and even debris from remnant of inflammation. So the biggest question remains ” Does inflammation come before disease or does disease cause inflammation’ Same can be said about saturated fat and cholesterol connection. Saturated fat aka animal fat does have lots of cholesterol. If 50 % of heart attacks are caused by cholesterol depostis, which I have seen in post heart attack victims, then where does it come from? As you know most of the cholesterol is manufactured and handled by the liver and dietary cholesterol accounts only for anywhere from 15 to 20 percent if my memory serves me correctly. So lets take two people. One, lets call him or her patient A, has low blood cholesterol due to liver metabalozing cholesterol very efficient and person B whos liver is not so efficient in metabalozing cholesterol. In case with patient A he or she can probaly induce massive amounts of dietary saturated fats or cholesterols and be fine with it. There are many, many studies showing this correlation. The most famous being was a psych patient who demanded to consume upwards of 12 eggs every day. It was quite a famous story in scinetific community. I think it was event aken to court and the patient was allowed to consume it because his liver took care of extra dietary cholesterol metabolizing it. So it might not be that easy for all. Eating plenty of saturated fat and animal cholesterol might in absense of carbs might be totally fine for Jimmy Moore or Vadim but might be deadly for those whos liver is stubborn in metabalozing it and instead it stays in the blood. I am not so sure that having high cholesterol in the blood is not dangerous where I have seen cholesterol deposits kill people. It has to come from somewhere. I for one loved eating shirataki noodles until I read so many articles saying it is absolutely detrimental to ones health. So I stopped for a while. I am going back eating it again though. There are many controversies out there even in a low carb world, artificial sugars, soy, saturated fat, frankenstein and other things. The jury is still out. But what is important and what we can agree on that high carb diet is no way to go especially for those of us who are insulin resistant. I was in a rush so if there are any grammar issues or spelling I appologize.

  3. This fellow’s pattern of eating definitely works for him and likely many others. At least he was very gracious about the livinlowcarb method ( higher fat). It’s very true that one has to find the level of carbs that they can tolerate, in my case, for general well being and feeling healthy. I’m still experimenting, but find that at age 60 I function best on almost no carbs. That way I rarely feel those gnawing hunger pains that make me grab the sweets etc. Today I added an apple (you’d think that’s no big deal) to my chicken and cheese lunch ( we were rushing to a funeral), and I started to feel hungry shortly after. So with that happening, I know I really need to stop even eating fruit. Sounds crazy but it works for me.
Sorry this is so long – but I have to thank you Jimmy for your online work, as it’s what clued me in to finding out how I need to eat.

  4. A great interview…Some shows just seem to tug at me more so than others and this was one of them. I could almost see Jimmy say NO NO…thats not correct in his statement about fat. I too disagreed with that part of the interview. Other than that…I am purchasing the book.
    Best to you….

  5. Interesting that he is so anti high fat after saying that you can die from protien poisoning. I mean what is he eating if he eats low/carb low fat? I’m with you Jimmy. High fat low carb is the way to go. I like the skin on my chicken breast and yolks in my eggs. At least he is promoting low carb. I just could not go that low on fat in my LLVLC lifestyle.

  6. Would like too comment on Vadium’s post…Its the adulterated oil that is in the arteries that will kill you and that is the problem. As Walter Brennan use to say from the Guns of Will Sonnett, No Brag Just Fact……..Its not the fat in steaks, hamburgers etc….Its the ruined oil that is purchased in grocery stores that is used for cooking…Listen to Brian Peskin’s interview on Monday…He has changed my life forever on oils etc….He will knock your socks off especially on cancer and heart attacks etc. Brian Peskin says it is sinful that the doctors do not keep up with this issue and act upon , just sinful……just sinful as thousands die because they don’t…

  7. I want to thank Jimmy and all the great listeners who took the time to listen and comment on this episode. Time is valuable and I appreciate the time you spent with me and allowing me into your homes. I wish you all a very happy holiday season, good health and long life. 🙂

  8. I don’t totally disagree with the idea of not going face down in fatty foods like cheese, etc if one is trying to lose weight. Even Dr. Eades has admitted that going face down in the cheese and nuts can prevent weight loss due to EXCESS CALORIES.

Though conversely I would never attempt a “Kimkins” type diet of BOTH VLC and VLF at the SAME time. Rabbit starvation in NOT healthy.

  9. To Vadim – Of course arterial deposits are also made up of chemically unstable “heart healthy” polyunsaturated oils. And if you want a lot of sat-fat in the OLE bloodstream, then simply eat a lot of refined carbs. Stephen Phinny did an experiment which showed that a high carb diet resulted in MORE sat-fat in bloodstream than a high sat-fat diet that is low in carbs. Not to mention triglycerides.

  10. Several years ago I went on a low carb diet. At the same time, tried to eliminate fats, cause we all know that eating fat is bad. So I was eating baked, boiled, poached lean proteins, no skin, egg whites, no dairy, no cheese, no added fats and very little carbs. BIG MISTAKE! My joints, especially my ankles got so inflammed that I could hardly walk. Not knowing anything about healthy fats, I chalked it up the the low carb diet and gave it up.

Since then, I have learned much about the benefits of eating healthy fats. I am now low carbing without joint issues. I am eating full fat dairy and meats. I eat saturated fats. I eat good healthy fats (including lots of butter) and I supplement with fish oils.

So the moral to the story, at least in my case, is that a low carb/low fat diet might not be such a good thing.

  11. generally love your podcasts and find them very informative, but this one sounded like an infomercial. the guy was annoying and condescending and did not provide any interesting information. i wouldn’t listen if you had him on again. did i mention he was annoying?

  12. I agree with “you” very informercial and exceedingly condescending. I’m guessing that Doug is not familiar at all with your work or the fact that many of your listeners are extremely well informed on diet, body chemistry, physiology and the low carb lifestyle.

His manner is more suited to uneducated grade school kids.

  13. I do love jicama but it has 11 carbs and 2 sugars in 1 cup. Even with 5 grams of fiber, I have to wonder how good it is as a staple in the low carb diet.

  14. loved his idea about using Jicama….living in the San Joaquin Valley in Ca should not make it difficult to find…I. for one, however, was irritated with the “sales pitch” nature of conversation (reminded me of some of the Amway folks I’ve had to chase off of the property) and his propensity to talk over Jimmy “directly to ‘your audience’ was just rude….
