Hello and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!
Today we present Part 1 of a two-parter with author, dietitian and diabetes educator Diane Kress. We’ve had a lot of requests to have Diane appear on the show, and she was very generous with her time giving us an HOUR AND A HALF, which we’re breaking up for you — Part 2 appearing on Thursday, October 15, 2009.
Diane is the author of The Metabolism Miracle: 3 Easy Steps to Regain Control of Your Weight…Permanently and she believes it is the next step in the low-carb journey that the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins began in the 1970s. In this first installment, she and Jimmy discuss: metabolic syndrome, the differences between “Metabolism A” and “Metabolism B”, what we’ve learned about the pancreas since Dr. Atkins passed away, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Tune in to Part 2 later this week for the answer to the question, “What’s wrong with the South Beach Diet?” and so much MUCH more!

Wow guys, this is really one of the best interviews I have listened to since the one with Dr. James E Carlson way back. I am looking forward to episode two. *8-)
I do however have one question for Diane. She mentioned in the last few minutes, comparing The Miracle to Atkins, something about the new evidence that some carbs (veggies etc.) do not have the same impact to insulin as other carbs. Is there any real studies backing this ?
What I fail to understand is how the body’s cells, receptors, pancreas etc. can differentiate between carbs once it is glucose. I am not referring to fructose or alcohol or the so called glycemic index here. I’m talking about normal carbs turning into glucose. How does these parts of the body know that a spesific glucose molecule comes from a something like bread and that another one comes from something like a veggie – thus having two total different results, releasing different amounts of insulin for the EXACT same amount of glucose molecules ? Surely glucose has one and only one chemical formula structure ?
@JayCee,
Diane IS talking about the glycemic index without using that phrase. You are right in that blood glucose is blood glucose regardless of source. Maybe the public needs this type of book to make basic information understandable. Even a type 2 diabetic can control SLIGHTLY elevated blood glucose. She is also talking about low carb without using that phrase. I used to think this type of book was just a money grab but have come around to believe the public has difficulty with nutritional concepts and may be helped with a simpler point of view.
Ok so after listening to the second podcast, I am totally changing my mind about this being such a great podcast hehe. I disagree on a lot of things mentioned and recent research agrees with me. Also, there is really not so much (if any) difference between Atkins (especially if you read Dr. Atkins NEW Diet Revolution) and the first phase of her program. The explanation about fat density (weight) (Part2) is great and explains why the scale doesn’t seem to move, although we are losing fat mass.
Daily Mail in the UK has run precis of Metabolism Miracle by Diane Kress. The book is not available here yet until the summer! Therefore, having started this Diet yesterday, there are unanswered questions in the paper article. AS part one lasts 8 weeks, I need to know whether any fruit is permissable and how often? Fruit is not mentioned, other than a dessert using cream and ricotta cheese with lemon zest. Also, no mention of alcahol….allowed or not? If so,what? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Hi Jimmy, after listening to both parts, I feel strongly to comment:
In my copy of Atkins 2002 publication, I have find that it deals with:
– Blood lab results before and 6 week after
– Real good preference, ie: grass fed meat and dairy. Nitrate free cold meats..
– Deals with Insulin issue and pre-diabetic and diabetic conditions
-Grading also to put it simple High , medium and low resistance to fat loss , which is an easier way to explain the insulin resistance and the role of hormons!
– Glycemic index , with detailed list
– 4 stages and how to introduce and customize carb introduction in OWL and in what order
-Food intolerance like dairy, nuts….etc and how to discover it.
-supplements
– work out
– Eat every 6 hrs?? ( This last one is something I am confused about, since there is IF too, so really is an uncertain area for me)
– As far as calorie and saturated fat goes, Dr Atkins mentions you need to eat until satisfied , but dont gorge on it..) meaning calorie still matters
I mean I really havent find any new issues that he didnt considered in any of the latter Low-carbs, ie: Paleo, protein power, primal Bp…
all these concept were included in Atkins 2002 book.
It just I think unfair that Atkins gets bad publicity bc of the commercial part of its products, BUT in this book he puts his preferance 100% for real food.
As far as amount of saturated fat and other healthy fats olive oil, coconut oil….etc. According to Dr Eades Protein power and in 30 day food plan , mentions that must be taken with care , specially in case of small woman if weight lost is desired. He mentions that small people have less caloric needs and should stick towards the lower end.
I enjoyed the first part of the interview as she explains in simple words and is easy to understand which can be very useful for people still on low-fat diets and struggeling . But didnt like the 2nd where she talks about the Atkins with out reading the book?? 2002 version!
I still think the Atkins approch is the best as every one is different and it gives you all the information how to customize individual eating plan in OWL.
Thanks for the interview.
“It just I think unfair that Atkins gets bad publicity bc of the commercial part of its products” Agree. And equally unfair that Weight Watcher’s gets NO bad publicity over THEIR commercial products which, incidentally, isn’t “part” of their business; it IS their business. They’re a Heinz subsidiary.
PS:
Jimmy, just to mention in case of miss interpretation, I think Dr Eades and Mark sisson , my heros ( specially Mark), are backing and providing through investigation information on new studies, but only to support what Dr. Atkins pointed out in the first place. However not taking off any of the merits they deserve for working on this along with many other people , you for example…
What is new in their work , is the work out part of this way of healthy life style, which takes in consideration the hormonal aspect of work out, ie cortisol production, stress …etc
