Hello and welcome back to The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Today, Jimmy shares an interesting moment of interpersonal drama in the form of his aborted interview with Pastor Ron Williams, bodybuilder, clergyman and author of Faith & Fat Loss. Although Jimmy disagreed with some of Pastor Ron’s points, he was very respectful when asking for explanations and clarifications. Pastor Ron seemed to be threatened or perhaps out of his depth in the face of Jimmy’s inquiries and decided to abruptly call off the interview and hang up.

To give a fuller sense of the background for this conversation, we’ve included the behind-the-scenes friendly banter from the beginning of the call–the part we usually remove from interviews. It is really a shame that Pastor Ron chose to stop participating in the conversation, as the topic of faith and weight loss is a serious one that bears more discussion.

Was Jimmy courteous and fair? Listen in and decide for yourself! Please share your impressions and opinions of this debacle in the comments section below.

  1. This was rediculous! Just because someone doesn’t agree with what the “Pastor” says, he hangs up? What world is he a part of? Do not leading researchers disagree with each other regarding what is causing obesity in our society and how to treat it? The “pastor” needs to toughen up his sensitive skin and offer his plan, then leave it at that. It would be more believeable, though, if he use more facts than “facts.”

  2. Boy. It was interesting and informative up to the point where you disagreed with him, and then he said it wasn’t a good interview! I’m very surprised at his behavior. He wanted to give you his science, but didn’t want to hear yours. He keeps insisting that it’s your “experience”, as if there is not science behind it! Typical close-minded anti-low-carber.

Both of you are Christians (as am I). Where does treating each others as sibs come in here? I think you did. He sure didn’t, polite as he was.

  3. Obviously, some people don’t like to be disagreed with! Even when you agree to disagree. I thought you were very respectful. And he had some good points. Too bad he couldn’t just agree to disagree!

[WORDPRESS HASHCASH] The poster sent us ‘0 which is not a hashcash value.

  4. I think you were very professional and Pastor Ron just couldn’t stand the heat. I know eating low carb doesn’t lower your metabolism. I feel fantastic on the low carb and very focused once I get through the withdrawal of the carbs effects. I think you were great Jimmy. Pastor Ron had the problem and just couldn’t agree to disagree and move on.

  5. Jimmy, I think what happened here is very logical. Pastor Ron seems to be a person of faith but only the faith that he shares and beleives. Thats what makes us human go to war with each other. I am sure he would hang up on you had you disagreed on anything he said concerning religion. His dietary approach is beyond reproach. Not that you tried to reproach him, but he felt you got in a way of him spreafding the word of Ron, Pastor Ron that is and he wastn having any of it! Thats all! Either that or his cortisol lvele was rising rapidly and it was time to collect himself!

  6. Jimmy,

Don’t worry about him. He’s a psuedo-scientist. Besides the fact he’s only interested in his viewpoint. Some of the things said he was a college professor. I couldn’t see where. Do you happen to know?

    Brian

Have no idea, Brian. He hung up before I could ask him.

    –Jimmy

  7. Well, I think this is simply an example of something that is becoming more & more prevalent – the inability of most people to engage in an intellectual debate. People have become very visceral. Jimmy, you just keep doing what you do. I think Pastor Ron needs to experience a little personal “soul growth”.

  8. What a shame, I enjoyed a lot of his knowledge and was even interested in his pointers on carb restriction and potential problems. He had something to offer too bad he blew all his good work by being way too sensitive and close minded on the things we do not agree on.

  9. I just happened along this website by chance, and listened to the whole taped interview. I found Pastor Williams was very well informed especially about the content of water today. I did not understand why -one person’s ideals or scientific data is better or more important it seems -than another person’s viewpoint or data. As Christians – I believe both parties could have handled this better. I regret the interview did not go on longer…..
we are not on this earth to prove each other wrong or right-but respectfully treat each other with dignity and respect. I believe every person’s experiences and way of life is important -but we are all important.
I can’t really say I enjoyed why the banter came up in the first place. I am going to buy Pastor Williams book -and I can see now …why it sold out.

  10. Oh, I really wouldn’t worry too much about “this one”. I am responding to his criteria for his program (in parentheses) from his website.

It’s unfortunate that his disapproval of Atkins seems to based upon nothing, as whether one agrees or disagrees with Atkins, Atkins was very clear about what he believed.

-Includes God (Atkins does not address the issue of Deity)

-Deals with the root cause of body fat (Atkins’ root cause of body fat is carbohydrates and sugar)

-Eliminates all hindrances to fat loss (Atkins removes carbs and sugar, as those ARE the hindrances to fat loss)

-Is a complete program (I have no idea what this means)

-Does not eliminate any vital nutrients (Pastor Williams is unspecific, as which vital nutrients does he believe Atkins is missing?)

-Teaches you how to eat for permanent fat loss (Pastor Williams implies that Atkins is only temporary)

-Does not endorse toxic foods that make you fat loss resistant (Like Atkins does… are you kidding me?!!)

-Teaches you how to detoxify the fat cells (Williams seemed uninformed about the role of insulin and fat production, so WTF?)

-Has a fat-burning exercise program and teaches that less exercise is more (Atkins did not delve substantially into the role of exercise, except to do it. Gary Taubes (Good Calories, Bad Calories) has much more information of exercise; specifically, that it does not help us lose weight. However, others counter that with the type, quality, and intensity of exercise done for the purpose of fat loss.

-Promotes a permanent lifestyle change (Pastor Williams implies that Atkins is only temporary)

-Manages fat-storing hormones and heals the endocrine system (The most significant fat-storing hormone is insulin. Carbohydrates drives insulin which drives fat. Soooooooo, when you reduce carbohydrates, you reduce the production of insulin, thus creating less fat)

    -Is affordable (It is)

  11. Jimmy, I was very glad to hear you respectfully and politely disagree. Some people don’t tolerate any questioning and always have to be right. Unfortunately, some of these same people are attracted to positions of authority where they don’t ever have to engage in debate or consider new information. It sounds to me like this guy was one of those. And, it sounds to me like his grasp of scientific evidence and research was pretty shaky. I hope your listeners investigate his claims about water independently.

  12. Clearly, he was in this interview for what he could get for promoting his book. He said “we are not getting anything out of this interview” or something to that effect. I think you handled it very well and were respectful. Clearly, he’s had success in his approach. And I can understand that he’s fired up about what he does and wants everyone to be as successful and happy as he is. But I wish he’d open his mind and consider that other people have been succesful, happy and healthy doing things differently.

  13. being a devout Christian myself I run into this all the time Jesus wanted people to provide spiritual fruit not religious nuts

  14. Jimmy, I think you handled this interview the same way you handle all of your interviews. You were informed and extremely respectful. This is why I continue to listen to your show. You provide us with information from all sides so that we can make an informed decision about how we want to address our health and nutrition. The interview was interesting until he felt threatened for some reason. Didn’t he expect there would be some questions about low carb lifestyles on a show called “The Livin La Vida Low Carb Show”? Unfortunately, his conduct makes me wonder how reacts when someone comes to him with honest questions about Christianity. I hope that he wouldn’t refuse to answer and turn them away.

  15. Although this interview ended badly (through no fault of your own), I find the interviews you have done are very important because they provide alternative viewpoints on health and wellness. Keep up the great work.

  16. “What we have here, is failure to communicate”.
-Strother Martin to Paul Newman in “Cool Hand Luke”

  17. unfortunately he exhibited stereo-typical close minded Christian attitude that there is only one way and his is the righteous way.

  18. Jimmy you did a great job and its sad that he wouldn’t answer a question that he knew you both agree on regarding the exercise. Thank God I’m not part of his ministry. There can be only One God.

  19. I am not Christian, nor am I on a low-carb diet. I wanted to hear what this renowned natural bodybuilder had to say. I was a bit disappointed on two levels. First, while some of Ron’s facts were correct, other assertions of his about nutrition and water contamination were not correct. More importantly, you acted very respectfully, and so his abrupt termination of the interview was unjustified.

  20. You know what is a shame, when people claim to be natural in bodybuilding and they aren’t. I used to be a bodybuilding coach. Most natural people are holding back the truth. No they may not take steroids but there are many, many ancillary drugs they will build muscle that are classified as steroids. Bodybuilding is one of the most unhealthy “Sports” in the world. It’s the only “Sport” that when you compete in any event you don’t actually do what it took to get you there. Example. You practice basketball in your backyard to be a better basketball player by using a basketball. You use all the skills you practice with in the actual sport. All sports but bodybuilding are this way. Next, he was spouting pseudo science. Any scientist worth their salt understands that open mindedness is the key to new discoveries. He wanted to bring scripture into it, sorry as a Christian that’s offensive, keep it out of the debate. Use research that is current. Jimmy handled it very well. Obviously Pastor Williams forgot the first rule of interviewing. Be respectful of the interviewer. He handled it wrong. Keep it up Jimmy. Great job.

  21. What Pastor Ron was saying nutrition wise is all correct. You made no effort to offer scientific information except to send it in the mail to him. As someone who has done low carb and lost 70 pounds doing so I would never recommend it to anybody because you are robing your body of energy. You can not build muscle beyond three months and you could never be an athlete because you can not get enough energy. Also if you want to back that up with the bible Jesus called himself the bread of life. He must of known the importance of natural bread to compare himself to it. Also while I think your intention was good because you did not want to fight I think it just became pointless because how could you have a conversation if he made all his statements and you simply came with I believe you are wrong let’s move on. You should have either said nothing in rebuttal or actually backed up what you were saying because he did ask for your science but then you failed to offer it.
