We all know how detrimental refined carbohydrates–specifically sugars and flours–are to your weight and health. In fact, it can be so bad for some people that they need to treat their carbohydrate addiction like an alcoholic, smoker, or drug user would implement to overcome their addiction. That may sound extreme to some people, but for Joan Ifland it was just what she needed to get her life back and radically restore her health.

In Episode 194 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” I’m pleased to share my interview with Joan Ifland from the “Sugars and Flours” web site who talks about what it was like being in what she calls a constant state of “DIAS”:

Depressed
Irritable
Anxious
Shamed

After going through this period of self-discovery, Ifland wrote a book entitled Sugars and Flours: How They Make Us Crazy, Sick, And Fat And What To Do About It to help others beat back their addiction as well. She is currently finishing her doctorate degree to conduct research studies on this subject matter to continue building evidence that sugars and flours are at the root of so many preventable diseases. That research will be shared on The Refined Food Addiction Research Foundation web site. Although some of what Joan Ifland espouses doesn’t exactly line up with the principles that many low-carbers believe (i.e. she is concerned about the “high-fat” nature of foods like cheese, avocados, etc. and advocates people need to eat rice, oatmeal, beans, and even undercooked white potatoes), what she says about sugars and flours is spot on!
