Transcript of Episode 27:
You are listening to Episode 27 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” What an exciting time to be a supporter of this remarkable way of eating in the year 2007 as the science is finally catching up to what many of us who have made this our permanent lifestyle change have already known–low-carb diets are safe, effective, and far superior to the low-fat, low-calorie diets that have plagued the obese population in the United States and around the world for far too long. That’s why I’ve been having a ball sharing with you all the latest studies and research that has been coming out about livin’ la vida low-carb during my “Fact-Filled February” series this month. The two shows I have lined up for you this week include numerous studies that have been pouring in about how low-carb is indeed helping people with diabetes control their disease with little to no insulin or medicine. There’s so much to fit into this topic that I’m gonna have to dedicate BOTH podcast shows this week to the low-carb connection to diabetes. We’ll get into that head first in just a moment.
First, let me thank everyone who has voted so far in our listener poll. In case you missed it posted at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com last week, we are asking YOU the following question: “If you could make the ‘Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show’ podcast even better, what would you change?” Your answer to that question is being recorded as we speak and will play an instrumental part in the future direction of what we are doing here with this podcast show. Please take a moment right now and go to TheLivinLowCarbShow.com to register your vote in this poll. Are the podcasts too long, too short, too frequent, too infrequent–let us know what you think so we can better serve you! You can also write us a customized response if you think there is something else we should be doing with the show. THANK YOU for sharing your feedback!

As promised, I’m gonna share with you some of the latest advances in nutritional research as it relates to livin’ la vida low-carb and diabetes. It simply astounds me how diabetes advocacy groups like the American Diabetes Association have attempted to sweep this all-natural and healthy nutritional approach under the rug by pretending carbohydrate consumption has nothing at all to do with the diabetes epidemic we are now facing. But as you will learn in Episode 27 and 28 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” this week, carb intake has everything in the world to do with regulating blood sugar levels and helping diabetics take back control of this horrible condition once and for all. It’s time to wake people up to the reality of the situation!
The first study I want to highlight is out of New Zealand and is believed to be the world’s first such study on the impact of the Atkins diet on diabetes. The astounding results of that study released in May 2005, which showed diabetics not only lost weight but also saw significant improvements in their illness, have led to even more studies which we will share with you today and Thursday. Lead research Dr. Jeremy Krebs, an endocrinologist from Wellington Hospital, observed a dozen overweight diabetic patients between the ages of 35 and 62 over a four-month period who went through the various phases of the Atkins diet during the study as opposed to the more highly-recommended diabetic diet that includes low-fat, low-calorie foods.
What were the results to their health? They lost an incredible 8 percent of their total body weight in the first three months, their blood pressure dropped, their HDL cholesterol increased, their LDL cholesterol came down, their energy levels went through the roof, and they generally felt better than they ever have before. And, oh yeah, their glucose tolerance levels soared. Dr. Krebs was completely overwhelmed by the positive improvements in the diabetes patients he examined. Here’s his initial reaction to the study results: “When I went into it, with no published studies, I was expecting we would see [the low-carb diet] would be harmful. I was not surprised people were able to lose weight, but the health parameters all improved more than I expected.”
Yeah! Now we’ve convinced a research doctor that the low-carb lifestyle does actually have health benefits in addition to helping people lose weight. While most health professionals universally accept livin’ la vida low-carb as a weight loss method (although, most of them would say “temporarily”), it’s been like pulling teeth to get these doctors to see the long-term health benefits to their patients from being on the low-carb lifestyle. And when a patient has diabetes, the results are even more promising! The only change the researchers made to the traditional Atkins diet is that they did not allow the study participants to eat any saturated fat, but rather monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats. Dr. Krebs said he received repeated warnings from his medical colleagues about his study participants experiencing possible kidney problems from eating too much protein on a low-carb lifestyle, but his observations led him to believe that was simply not a major concern. He also credited the low-carb approach for giving study participants a way of eating that helped them feel fuller and more satisfied without having to count calories and yet still lose weight while improving their health.
WOO HOO! Can we get Dr. Krebs to start lecturing doctors about the healthy alternative low-carb offers diabetics and obese people? Man, if doctors would just listen to what one of their own is saying, we could overcome this negative barrier regarding low-carb. Sadly, it will take a lot more studies like this before medical “experts” change their already-made-up-minds about what to think about low-carb. Interestingly, Dr. Krebs noted that one of his study participants “just did not get” the Atkins diet and on his own decided he was going to keep on eating the same amount of carbs that he had been eating in addition to the extra fat and protein on the Atkins diet. Talk about your recipe for disaster! Needless to say, this was the only patient who actually GAINED weight and make his health worse than it was before the study began.
What an idiot! Did he really expect to lose weight and improve his health on a steady diet of lots of protein, fat AND carbs?! It simply amazes me when people stray away from the plan thinking they know better about how to do it than some silly low-carb book written by reputable authors. Just a small word of advice to you: DON’T DO THAT! Despite the success of the low-carb lifestyle in this study, though, medical professionals have still scoffed at any beneficial factors associated with low-carb. It goes against everything they’ve ever known about health and nutrition. And by golly they’re gonna keep on protecting their precious little reputations so they don’t have to admit they were ever WRONG! It may not be today, or tomorrow or even next week or next year, but someday these same doctors who have been lambasting the low-carb lifestyle will be forced to apologize to their patients when they realize just how wrong they were about livin’ la vida low-carb. The sooner that day comes, the quicker we will see massive improvements in the weight and health of the world’s population.
There’s another study that was actually presented at the annual meeting of the ADA just a couple of months after the one by Dr. Krebs by Drs. Saul Genuth and David Nathan of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio that revealed the low-carb nutritional approach produced “normal” blood sugar levels in diabetes patients which improved their health by cutting the risk of cardiovascular disease by nearly 50 percent as well as reducing the chance of a heart attack or a stroke by 57 percent. The researchers were surprised by the results of their study because this simple little low-carb lifestyle change worked much better than any prescription medications for those health problems.
Well shazam! Imagine that. You don’t actually need a pill to feel better after all. This is excellent news for diabetics and for people who are looking to greatly improve their overall health. The results of this research validate the low-carb lifestyle which actively promotes limiting the amount of sugar and refined carbohydrates you consume as a means for helping you lose weight and keep it off while improving your health. Even ADA scientific director Richard Kahn called this study “pretty astounding” and added that “no other study has shown an effect of glucose control on cardiovascular disease.” That’s a pretty strong non-endorsement endorsement of the low-carb diet for treating diabetes. Actually, what is most amazing is how long it has taken for low-carb to be studied this closely as a serious treatment option for diabetics.
All too often it seems doctors would rather have us take a drug rather than make natural changes in our lifestyle to fix our physical ailments. Most of these prescriptions are very expensive and are making somebody or a bunch of somebodies a whole lotta money. We would be much better off to continue looking at natural remedies like livin’ la vida low-carb to deal with health issues rather than to continue down the neverending cycle of funding the pharmaceutical companies and their pursuit of the next “wonder” drug for this and that. While the patients studied in this research had Type 1 diabetes, aka juvenile diabetes, Dr. Nathan believes the findings will also apply to people with Type 2 diabetes. He said that Type 2 diabetics are generally 30 years older than Type 1s on average at diagnosis and often have other heart risk factors such as high blood pressure and obesity. This is all the more reason to immediately begin implementing a plan that will lower their blood sugar to a reasonable level again. The low-carb lifestyle is that plan and can help wean people from their addiction to sugar which, in turn, will make an improvement on a myriad of health-related conditions. The study of 1,375 diabetes patients is part of an ongoing look since the 1980s at controlling symptoms experienced by diabetics. Keeping a closer eye on blood sugar levels has enabled the patients to prevent heart disease from occurring and low-carb living has brought blood sugar levels way down automatically.
We are already seeing the number of diabetes cases in the United States and around the world rising at an alarming rate, so these studies like the ones I shared with you today make the case that livin’ la vida low-carb is the real solution to the diabetes problem doctors have been desperately wanting for a very long time. Come back on Thursday to hear Episode 28 as I feature three more exciting studies on the low-carb answer to the diabetes question. At this point, it’s not a matter of if, but when the ADA and doctors will finally open their eyes and realize the solution to the diabetes epidemic is staring them right in the face–it’s livin’ la vida low-carb, baby!
