TRANSCRIPT:

This is Episode 25 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” and I’m pleased you could join us again today as we continue the “Fact-Filled February” feature that has been so popular this month. I’ve gone right to many of the most highly-respected scientific journals out there and gleaned from the enormous wisdom and knowledge of some of the best and brightest researchers who are examining low-carb diets today to bring you the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about livin’ la vida low-carb. Sometimes people mistakenly believe my enthusiasm and passion for the low-carb lifestyle is based merely on the emotional high that came from my own 190-pound weight loss success on it. While that’s most certainly hard to ignore, much of my excitement about low-carb has a lot more to do with what science is proving day after day, month after month, and year after year–that is, this incredibly delicious way of eating is a very nutritionally sound, proven to be safe, and amazingly effective way to lose weight and improve your health dramatically. The fact that I’m living proof of that makes what I have to say all the more credible. And I’m gonna shouting it from the mountaintops as long as I have breath to breathe! You can count on that!

In last week’s Episode 24 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore,” I discussed how important the macronutrient fat is when you on a low-carb plan, not just for improving your heart health, but also your mental health as we discovered. In today’s podcast, I’d like to discuss another important macronutrient that has been catching quite a bit of flack from those same so-called health “experts” who go around badmouthing fat despite the fact that science is showing us that there are amazing health benefits to consuming this as well. Of course, I’m referring to protein. People who are livin’ la vida low-carb have long known the benefits of getting adequate amounts of protein in their diet. But a new study explains in a little more detail why higher protein consumption is good for people attempting to lose weight.

Dr. Rachel Batterham from the Department of Medicine at University College in London, England conducted a comparison study of normal-weight and obese people to see what impact adding protein to their diet would have on the presence of an important hunger-controlling hormone called peptide YY (or PYY for short). PYY was previously determined by researchers to help study participants eat one-third less food in both the normal-weight and obese people when it was injected into their bodies. However, Dr. Batterham said the greater presence of protein in the body will create the same effect. “We’ve now found that increasing the protein content of the diet augments the body’s own PYY, helping to reduce hunger and aid weight loss,” she found. In fact, Dr. Batterham even tried a high-fat diet as well as a high-carbohydrate diet on both normal-weight and obese people to see if production of PYY would be similar, but it was not. She even conducted the study in mice and the results were the same as in humans.

Interestingly, the study found that high-protein consumption reduced caloric intake naturally because the PYY acted as an appetite suppressant mechanism in the body. Mice that were fed a high-protein diet produced more PYY and, thus, gained less weight than the mice that ate normal portions of protein. Additionally, the researchers discovered that mice who had their body’s ability to make PYY removed ate much more food and, predictably, became obese rather quickly. When these genetically-altered mice were fed high-protein diets, it made little difference in their weight which points to a direct link between protein consumption and this hormone known as PYY. Incidentally, these same mice were then injected with PYY and immediately began losing weight. Dr. Batterham says this study almost verifiably points to the lack of PYY production as one of the main causes of obesity and that adding more protein to your diet can boost the production of this important hormone. She concluded, “One potential weight loss strategy is therefore to increase the satiating power of the diet and promote weight loss through the addition of dietary protein–harnessing our own satiety system.” The results of this incredible study behind an important element of livin’ la vida low-carb appeared in the September 2006 issue of the scientific journal Cell Metabolism.

Of course, eating more protein to ward off hunger is the basis for the popular “Total Wellbeing Diet” by Dr. Manny Noakes that has been all the rage in Australia as well as “Protein Power” by Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades. It’s all about that beautiful word known as SATIETY–feeling satisfied to the point that you just aren’t hungry. If you are constantly starving on your low-carb diet, then perhaps you should look at how much protein you are eating. There’s absolutely no reason why you should walk around feeling like your stomach is gnawing on your ribs when you are livin’ la vida low-carb. That’s what life was like for me on a low-fat, calorie-restricted diet. Hungry, irritable, deprived, and disgusted with being forced to believe that was the only way I could ever hope to lose weight and then maintain it forever. No wonder so many people have thrown in the towel on doing ANYTHING about that obesity! Who wants to go through the pain and agony of suffering through life living like that? Not me, which is why I am proudly livin’ la vida low-carb! And nobody is ever gonna convince me to eat a low-fat, low-calorie, portion control diet again for the rest of my long and healthy life! Been there, done that, made me fat!

Thanks to Dr. Batterham we know this obesity epidemic we are facing right now very well may have to do with this PYY hormone production. See, I told you research would start catching up to us sooner or later. This is the first such study that explains WHY protein works so well to naturally reduce calorie consumption while keeping you full and satisfied for hours which results in eating less. It’s one of the beautiful things about the low-carb lifestyle. Dr. Batterham made an important observation about eating high-protein. Here’s what she said: “Such a diet is perhaps more typical to that of our hunter-gatherer ancestors.” Boy is she so right! In fact, Dr. Batterham noted that modern humans eat about half as much protein as their ancestors did. Now she wants to conduct larger, long-term studies to confirm the findings of her study.

I was a bit disconcerted to hear her cowtow to the low-fat propagandists when she said she is not advocating people start on the Atkins diet because she does not advocate saturated fat consumption along with the protein. You know, they just can’t get past the fat thing now, can they? But, despite this little blip in her thinking about a healthy diet, Dr. Batterham’s research is still a GIANT step in the right direction and those of us who are livin’ la vida low-carb appreciate hearing studies that are honest about showing the healthy benefits of a high-protein diet. We look forward to hearing more from Dr. Batterham in the coming years as she continues proves this way of eating really is the best way to manage both your weight and health. That’s a fact you can count on!
