Greetings low-carbers! Welcome to “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore!” Happy February and we certainly hope you are sticking with your low-carb program in 2007. You ARE still on it, right? *wink*

Today Jimmy brings you his twenty-second episode which just so happens to kick off the new feature this month called “Fact-Filled February” highlighting some of the positive research that has come out in favor of the low-carb lifestyle.

Jimmy unveils an interesting survey today whose subjects are members of the Active Low-Carber Forums at forums.lowcarber.org, which by the way is an excellent support resource for you to try if you are livin’ la vida low-carb.

The results of this survey were published in a major medical journal and are particularly interesting as they show what REAL low-carbers are actually eating (and it’s not just meat, cheese, eggs, and butter either!).

Many will be surprised, but not our listeners…you’re too smart for that!

You’re listening to Episode 22 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” as we introduce a new month in 2007 with a brand new feature series called “Fact-Filled February.” In the podcast shows over the next four weeks, I will be featuring studies, surveys, and solid scientific research that supports the health and weight loss benefits of the low-carb lifestyle. Much of this information has never made it into the mainstream of public thought because of the cowards in the media and those so-called health “experts” who serve as obnoxious self-appointed truth detectors when it comes to sharing all the facts about low-carb with the people who desperately need to hear them. Rest assured WE will be sharing the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about this amazing lifestyle I like to call livin’ la vida low-carb throughout the month of February. In today’s episode, we’ll get into a recent survey of people on a low-carb diet that was published in a respected medical journal that completely eradicates many of the myths about this way of eating, including the mistaken notion by the opposition that low-carb living is devoid of vegetables. We’ll see about that!

Speaking of vegetables, have you heard about what our sponsor Fresh Express did last week? Despite the fact that none of their products have ever been shown to cause any food borne illnesses in its history, they generously donated $2 million towards an independent scientific advisory panel looking into preventing the dangerous spread of E. coli to future spinach and other produce crops. You can read more about this in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. Fresh Express realizes people are greatly concerned about this issue of food safety in the bagged salad industry and they want to assure the public that they are committed to getting to the bottom of this issue so you can feel confident about purchasing fresh produce for your healthy lifestyle. Visit FreshExpress.com to see what they are doing to bring these low-carb vegetables to your dinner table. That’s Fresh Express…where fresh comes first.

Tell them “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Man” Jimmy Moore sent ya! Thanks, mate!

Okay, we’re gonna kick off this inaugural “Fact-Filled February” episode today with a survey that was conducted by three highly-respected researchers–Dr. Richard Feinman from the SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Mary C. Vernon from the University of Kansas and Dr. Eric Westman from Duke University. I have had the distinct privilege of interviewing all three of these medical professionals about their various research interests at my blog and will provide a link to each of those interviews in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. Some of the best and brightest minds are working behind the scenes to provide scientific proof affirming livin’ la vida low-carb as the most amazingly healthy and effective diet plan you will ever go on in your entire life. We have merely scratched the surface of the science behind low-carb and we have most definitely not heard the final word from these and others about low-carb yet. So get ready to hear these names again and again in the coming years as low-carb makes a huge comeback.

The survey Dr. Feinman conducted was with 3,000 members of the popular Active Low-Carber Forums located online at forum.lowcarber.org. In other words, these were real-life low-carb dieters who are actively living this lifestyle after educating themselves about it, not just relying on the media version of low-carb consisting of only meat, cheese, and eggs. Some people low-carb that way, but not most of us. What Dr. Feinman wanted to see was what kind of changes have been made in the people who started livin’ la vida low-carb compared to their old poor dietary habits. According to the results of the survey, he discovered that contrary to popular belief low-carb dieters aren’t gorging themselves on tons of fatty foods as has been suggested among low-carb antagonists. Instead, they are actually replacing the old starchy and sugary foods they were previously consuming with lots of green leafy vegetables and salads. In fact, Dr. Feinman said 54 percent of the survey participants increased their consumption of salad greens with 34 percent reporting “double their usual consumption” of green vegetables to replace the starch and sugars they had been eating. Additionally, only a very small percentage of respondents said they had drastically increased their consumption of such high-fat foods as beef, bacon, and butter–foods that most people believe are the staples of a typical low-carb diet. Not true! But what the researchers found was that half of the people who lost 30 or more pounds following a low-carb diet and then kept it off for a year had not significantly increased their consumption of those high-fat foods. The lone exception was the lower-fat chicken, which 34 percent of the low-carb dieters surveyed said they doubled their chicken consumption. As for cravings, the most missed food was bread, but many of the survey respondents said they had completely lost their cravings for high-carb foods altogether. I can certainly concur with that.

In regards to the reaction from family doctors that the survey participants went to see about their low-carb diet, Dr. Feinman said he was surprised by the change in attitude about low-carb living within the medical community. Half of the survey participants said they consulted with their doctor about going on the low-carb lifestyle before and during their weight loss experience and 55 percent of them said their doctor supported them in their effort along with another 30 percent who said their doctor displayed no opinion or support until they began seeing weight loss. Dr. Feinman said this is an important shift in thinking that is happening. Unfortunately, though, it’s not happening fast enough since the prevailing thoughts about livin’ la vida low-carb from quite a few in the medical community is still quite negative. But it is good to hear that is changing as Dr. Feinman’s survey indicates.

One startling result of the survey was the subject of portion control. Most of the survey participants did not actively engage in watching their portions beyond the natural metabolic responses to restricting carbs, but over half of them said they felt like they are eating less food now than they did before starting low-carb. Dr. Feinman said this should serve “as a model” for doctors interested in helping their patients lose weight since “most people were happy with the diet and…’have more energy.'” The answers to this 27-item questionnaire were quite revealing about the actual behaviors of people following a low-carb regimen. The demographics of the average respondent indicates that they were mostly women and mostly significantly overweight with a large number of them intending to and, in many cases, succeeding at losing more than 100 pounds. The great majority of the survey participants were following either the Atkins or an Atkins-like low-carb diet.

Another notable statistic from the survey was the fact that most of the respondents did not turn to the government or health agencies for information about their diet and health. HA! Gee, I wonder why with all the low-fat, low-calorie, portion-control propaganda they relentlessly push on the American people day in and day out! Good for these survey respondents for bucking the trend and learning about other ways to lose weight and get healthy.

If you are interested in finding out more about this survey conducted by Dr. Feinman, I will provide a link to the October 2006 issue of the Nutrition Journal where it was published.

One more noteworthy aspect of this survey was what the low-carbers who participated in it said were the most significant parts of their low-carb lifestyle. The top two answers were “avoiding sugar” and “avoiding starch” followed by “drinking water” and “eating vegetables,” something most low-carbers automatically start doing more of when they begin this healthy way of eating. This is so true for me personally. I couldn’t imagine going a single day without a big plateful of Fresh Express salad greens, especially baby spinach. Mmm mmm! I can’t even remember what it was like NOT eating this way. Truth be told, I don’t want to remember those poor dietary habits of the old me anytime soon. Removing the mystique about the practical application of livin’ la vida low-carb is most of the battle in convincing people this is indeed a lifestyle change they can and should be doing to improve their weight and health. I applaud Dr. Feinman for sharing the truth about those of us who are low-carbing because it just goes to show you the hyperbolic fearmongering that is going on about livin’ la vida low-carb has become irrelevant.

That’s it for Episode 22 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Come back next week as we continue the “Fact-Filled February” series with yet another nugget of truth straight from the scientific community proving low-carb is everything we know it is. Be sure to tell your skeptical friends to tune in for more unbiased, science-based answers to their concerns about low-carb. I can’t wait! So, until then, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb![podcast]http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/wp-content/uploads/llvlcep22.mp3[/podcast]
