Greetings Low-Carbers, and welcome to Episode 21 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore!” Thank you as always for taking time to join us again as we delve deep into the most meaningful topics of interest surrounding low-carb, weight loss, and health.

Today, Jimmy takes a look at a frightening set of predictions made at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual conference that should make every man, woman, and child in the United States of America take notice. Researchers at the University of Missouri-Columbia presented findings that in less than half a century, the United States will see 100 percent childhood obesity which will then quickly be followed by universal adult obesity.

Say what?!

Yep, you heard that right! Assuming the current trends continue at the same pace, everyone living in this country will be obese in LESS than fifty years from now! Wow, what are we going to do?!

You can bet our host Jimmy Moore has a few thoughts on that and you better believe they have a lot to do with personal accountability! Ahem! So listen up!

Have you heard about the study on obesity that was conducted by researchers out of the University of Missouri-Columbia? Dr. Frank Booth and Dr. Simon Lees made a presentation at the American College of Sports Medicine’s annual conference that they expect childhood obesity rates to reach 100 percent by the year 2044 and adult obesity rates to be at that level by the year 2058. Whoa! Did you hear that? According to this research, we are merely 37 years from every boy and girl in America being obese and just a little over a half century away from every man and woman following down the same path! In other words, in my lifetime I could live to see the day when EVERYONE walking around in this country is obese. Holy cow! Is this really the inevitable fate of the United States of America, the land of the buy one get one free burger deal at the local fast food joint and the home of the deep fried Coca-Cola and Snickers bars? Well, if all current indicators are any measure for what’s to come, then the answer to that question is a very depressing YES! This is why it is so important for people who genuinely care about the declining health and expanding waistlines of their fellow citizens to speak up for what has worked for them. For so many of us, that’s exactly what livin’ la vida low-carb has been.

In a way, I am pleased that two medical researchers like Dr. Booth and Dr. Lees have created this newfound sense of urgency about the problem of obesity because we have not given it the lofty importance that it deserves so we can seriously look into finding viable solutions for handling it before it gets much more out of control than it has already become. While I do not agree with restricting companies like fast food restaurants and soda manufacturers from marketing their products in the way they see fit to run their business as so many are proposing, I am convinced that people need to start taking this issue a lot more seriously than they are by taking personal responsibility for the choices that make. Stop pointing fingers at what you think the source of the problem is and look at those three fingers aimed back at you in your direction. This idea that it’s anyone else’s fault that you are fat has got to stop before any progress will be made in the great debate over dealing with obesity. At the same time, though, that means government and health leaders in this country and around the world must become more open to the possibility that the traditional recommendation of a low-fat/low-calorie/portion-control dietary approach to losing weight and getting healthy just doesn’t work for everyone. I explained some of the shortfalls of the failed low-fat, low-calorie diets in Episode 19 because we need leadership on this issue, not more of the same pandering to the special interests of the big manufacturers that exists today. Anyone who suggests a one-size-fits-all nutritional approach for everyone to follow is merely leading people down a path to failure. Yet that is exactly what has happened for so many years from supposedly intelligent people in positions of authority over health policy in this country that you wonder why they even bother continuing to recommend it time and time again. Don’t they realize the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result? If that doesn’t describe the low-fat advocates, then I don’t know what does. If low-fat was a business, then the company would have gone belly up a long time ago.

The fatalistic prediction of Dr. Booth and Dr. Lees is unfortunately based on the fact that Americans are not eating like they should and they are forgoing exercise as an ingredient in restoring their health to where it needs to be. In other words, they don’t care a lick in the world because they don’t see the harm in living their life the way they are right now. They’re not harming anyone, so why bother with living a healthier lifestyle? Well, I can certainly understand this dynamic personally because I used to be one of those who ate like there was no tomorrow and exercise wasn’t even in my vocabulary. But when I finally decided that enough was enough and that I needed to do something to overcome my obesity problem in 2004, I turned to the low-carb lifestyle and daily exercise to help get me there. Now it’s 2007 and I am 190 pounds lighter than I was three years ago. More importantly than the weight loss, though, is the fact that I have never felt this good in my entire life because I am as healthy as an ox! It really can happen for people if they just make up their minds to do this for themselves and then JUST DO IT! Don’t make it harder than it is.

Do Americans have it in them to care enough to “get off the ball and do something now” as Dr. Booth put it? Did you know your body was meant to enjoy exercise to function properly? As horrifying as that may sound to some people, you were born to move and move a lot! Exercise is not optional, but required if the obesity problem is going to be brought under control as I noted in Episode 15. Combined with a healthy low-carb eating plan, anyone can start to lose weight and feel great in just a matter of weeks by following a regular exercise routine. And that means ANYONE who is willing to put forth the effort to try to make it work. It’s not an easy road, but it is possible.

The researchers predicted that there will be an increase in early deaths due to obesity, the rampant spread of Type 2 diabetes which is expected to triple over the next few decades, and the development of various forms of cancer. All of these conditions could be handled if livin’ la vida low-carb were taken more seriously as a viable option for treating obesity and disease. Interestingly, Dr. Booth puts the burden of doing something about this on doctors by asking them to inquire with their patients about their personal habits, including whether or not they exercise, what they eat, if they drink alcoholic beverages and if they are smokers. So far, doctors have not shown a willingness to confront their patients about this issue because they fear lawsuits for defamation. If the American Civil Liberties Union doesn’t raise a stink about this, then I’m sure there will be a lot of patients who will balk at their doctors being so open and honest. But that’s exactly what we need to have happen if obesity trends are going to be reversed. People need to suck up their own pride and get out of denial. YOU ARE FAT, plain and simple. It’s time to wake up, America! We’ve sat back on our rears basking in the glory of our plentifulness for far too long now that we are destroying ourselves from the inside out. The fight against obesity is one that we all must take full responsibility for and do something about. I know it may seem hard, but it must be done. Take it from someone who’s been through the struggle himself, it is totally worth it. There are so many things I can do now that I could not do before I started livin’ la vida low-carb. Dr. Booth said “The public also needs to start taking responsibility for childhood inactivity” and he’s exactly right. We adults must set the example for the next generation in both our eating and exercise habits. What are we doing to show them the importance of doing what is right in regards to our health? Obesity will not go away on its own. Immediate action to correct this very real problem is needed to prevent the inevitable from happening in about 40 years from now! What will YOU do?

That’s it for Episode 21 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” I look forward to starting a brand new series of podcasts beginning this Thursday that I’m calling “Fact-Filled February” where I will dig up more of the incredible research studies that have come out showing how the low-carb lifestyle is indeed effective for improving the health and weight of people who are willing to give it a try. We’re locked, stocked, and loaded for bear in the month of February, so I encourage you to join us as we spread the truth to people who need to hear it. So, until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb![podcast]http://www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com/shownotes/wp-content/uploads/llvlcep21.mp3[/podcast]
