Hello, and welcome to the exciting 20th episode of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show With Jimmy Moore” and we can’t thank you enough for making this podcast the hit show that it has become in such a short period of time. You are the BEST listeners in the whole world!
People may accuse low-carbers of being hard on the low-fat and low-calorie diet approaches that many others swear by, but if you think about–turn about is fair play. The so-called health “experts” out there often contend that low-carb is a dangerous fad and destined to failure. Putting the shoe on the other foot is exactly what Jimmy does in this episode.
One shocking fact that Jimmy shares in Episode 20 is the number of scientific studies that show low-fat or low-calorie diets actually lead to permanent weight loss. Can you guess what that figure is? Here’s a clue: it rhymes with “Nero.” LOL! And yet those same “experts” keep fiddling in La-La land while Western society’s health is up in flames!

TRANSCRIPT OF EPISODE 20:
Thanks for listening to “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” as we hit Episode 20 with today’s podcast. Last time, I talked about how the government and health leaders in this country have refused to acknowledge that the low-fat, low-calorie diets they have so heavily promoted have not produced the results people need to bring their obesity under control. Today, I’m going to share with you exactly why the low-fat, low-calorie diets keep failing while low-carb is being proven as an effective and healthy alternative.
Before I started livin’ la vida low-carb, I can tell you that eating fresh vegetables was the very last thing on my mind. I just didn’t care. But when the time came to start living healthy and losing weight, I knew instinctively that adding veggies to my low-carb diet was exactly what I needed to do. That’s when I discovered the convenience and quality of Fresh Express ready-to-eat salads. I immediately fell in love with their baby spinach product which I like to pile high on my plate and sprinkle some mixed cheese on top along with some sunflower seeds and bits of turkey topped off with Ranch dressing and garnished with sugar-free sweet pickles…mmm, mmm–now that’s what I call a healthy low-carb meal! Go to FreshExpress.com to see the entire line of fresh, tasty low-carb green leafy vegetables available to you. That’s Fresh Express…where fresh comes first!
Whenever I start talking about how the low-fat, low-calorie diets have failed to help so many people lose weight and get healthy, I get defenders of that way of eating coming right at me accusing me of ridiculing a diet that has worked for them. It’s kinda nice putting the shoe on the other foot every once in a while so they can feel exactly how us low-carbers feel each and every day with the non-stop barrage of criticism from the media and self-righteous health “experts” out there telling us how dangerous and unhealthy livin’ la vida low-carb is. But there is an important distinction I’d like to make here about what I do compared to what they do. My thoughts and opinions on this subject are a direct result of my own experience following both the low-fat, low-calorie diets as well as low-carb. I can’t help it if someone disagrees with my experience, but it is what it is. These are my conclusions based on how I did with each of these plans. With that said, though, there are some practical reasons why low-fat, low-calorie, portion-control diets do not produce permanent weight loss in so many people that warrant a closer look. The highly-touted low-fat, low-calorie diets have been shoved down our throats for nearly three decades and yet they have not been successful. There are several major reasons why these diets have failed.
The first reason has to do with the calorie deficit myth. Most people believe that if they can simply reduce the calories they take in more than the calories they burn off during exercise, then they will experience weight loss. In fact, we’ve often heard if we cut 500 calories a day from our diet, then that will result in losing one pound in a week. Is this true? Well, yes and no. Yes it will produce some weight loss in the short term, but your body will adjust to the lower calorie intake and weight loss will stop. Therein lies the problem with low-fat, low-calorie diets. They work, but only for people who are willing to put up with feeling hungry ALL THE TIME and don’t mind eating terrible-tasting foods. I lost 170 pounds on a low-fat diet in 1999, but I literally could not continue to eat that way for the rest of my life. I was starving for real food since I felt deprived eating the disgusting fat-free and low-fat foods I thought were good for me. UGH! That was not a healthy way to live, regardless of the weight loss I had achieved.
The second reason low-fat, low-calorie diets fail is the fact that the body will do whatever it can to preserve itself. It’s survival of the fittest and your body will win that battle every single time. The amazing complexity of the human machine is that it quite literally adapts when you eat too much or not enough. Because you deprive your body of food when you are starving yourself on low-fat, low-calorie diet, your body goes into a literal survival mode and holds on to every bite of food it can get not knowing if it will receive enough food to give you the energy you need. While low-fat, low-calorie dieters are proud of the fact they count each and every fat gram and calorie in specified portion sizes for their meals, they may not even realize how much they are confusing their own body with how they eat. No wonder people who get off these kind of diets rapidly gain back their weight and then some! That’s exactly what happened to me in 1999 and I ballooned right back up to over 400 pounds afterwards.
Most of the recommended diets here in America just don’t give people enough food to eat. We’re trapped into thinking that if we are enjoying our weight loss experience that we must be doing something wrong. We think starvation and agonizing over food is what we should be doing on a diet. Why do we punish ourselves like that? There is actual scientific evidence that proves your body will desperately hold on to stored fat, especially in your belly, when you are on low-fat diet. In other words, eating a low-fat diet will make you fat! I’ll provide a link to this shocking study in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. If you want to lose fat, then a low-fat, low-calorie diet won’t do it for you. Remember this–there is no study showing a direct correlation between cutting fat and calories with a resulting permanent weight loss. NONE! However, there is a study from a Canadian university about caloric intake that shows calories are not as important in weight management as once thought. In this study, twelve sets of male twins were overfed 1000 calories a day for 84 days. If the direct correlation between weight and calories was viable, then this additional 84,000 calories should have resulted in the study participants each gaining 24 pounds. But guess what? Some of them only put on 9 1/2 pounds while others packed on 29 pounds. So the kind of diet you choose is indeed important and livin’ la vida low-carb is better for you because it puts your body into fat-burning mode through the process of ketosis which we have discussed in previous podcasts. When you are on a low-fat, low-calorie diet, you consume less food and your body doesn’t need as much nourishment to survive, so eventually your weight loss comes to a screeching halt and you are left wondering what went wrong. This is the point when most people decide to quit their diet because it wasn’t working or it wasn’t sustainable over the long haul. Either way, it failed.
Why would anyone ever want to go on a low-fat, low-calorie diet. No matter how much it is repackaged and allegedly improved year after year, it’s still always going to be a failed permanent weight loss approach. ALWAYS! But it’s not just the physical shortcomings that come with these diets, there are also the psychological and emotion pain that they cause which is the third reason why they fail so miserablely. It’s extremely hard to give up all those foods you love so much. No more full-fat cheese, tender and juicy cuts of beef and pork, healthy eggs with the yolk, etc. Living without these would be hard. This alone makes the low-fat diet nearly impossible to stick with over an extended period of time. It’s funny how people think low-carb is hard because you supposedly deprive yourself, but it’s not nearly as difficult as what you give up on the low-fat, low-calorie diets. When you are livin’ la vida low-carb, you have plenty of tasty choices while those other diets leave you no choices at all. That can certainly play tricks on your mind which can eventually derail your weight loss efforts. The low-carb lifestyle on the other hand is much better because you will enjoy lots of great-tasting foods and never feel deprived or hungry. NEVER!
Finally, when you are eating a low-fat, low-calorie diet, your primary source of energy is not fat or protein, it’s carbohydrates. These diets require as much as 70 percent of your daily food intake to come from carbs which only makes your body pump out ridiculous amounts of insulin to control your blood sugar. For anyone who is diabetic or insulin resistant, you know how dangerous this hormone can be in excessive amounts in your body. Introducing fat-free, but sugar-loaded foods into your body will only make your blood sugar spike quicker and higher than a more reasonable selection of low-carb foods would. You tell me which is better for controlling your blood sugar to ward off obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other health calamities in light of all the evidence you have heard today. I think we all know the answer to that question. That’s why we choose to limit our carb intake so we can maintain our weight and health where it needs to be. Once again, the low-fat, low-calorie lie shouldn’t be the only way recommended way for people to eat. Low-carb succeeds because it offers people who have tried and failed on these other diet plans a taste of what better, healthier living is supposed to be. They get to enjoy a much wider selection of foods that are both enjoyable and satisfying. It really is a lifestyle change that people should make and feel good about it. I have been livin’ la vida low-carb for three years and counting and wouldn’t have it any other way!
