Greetings low-carbers and welcome back to “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” as we enter the next phase of our Jump-Start January–featuring power-packed twice-weekly episodes on both Mondays AND Thursdays throughout the month of January!

We are lovin’ it and may even keep this schedule going! Let us know what you think!

Today Jimmy discusses why skipping exercise while low-carbing is a very bad idea–as our host puts it, it’s like taking a vacation and only driving halfway, then riding your bike the rest of the way. You’ll eventually get there, but it will take much longer and is probably a lot less pleasurable in the long run. (Unless you like biking, but then you are probably getting the exercise you need, anyway! LOL!).

In Episode 15, I’d like to get into an aspect of livin’ la vida low-carb that many people tend to neglect because they don’t feel it is necessary when you are on this way of eating. While it is true this is not required of people who begin the low-carb lifestyle, leaving this element of your commitment to better, healthier living out of the equation would be like driving your car halfway to your vacation destination and then riding a bicycle the rest of the way. Eventually you’ll get there, but you could have reached your goal faster if you had added this one element. What am I talking about? It’s exercise. I hit this subject matter head-on in Chapter 3 of my book “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat To Sensationally Skinny In One Year.” Allow me to read an excerpt from page 37 of my book where I discuss this topic:

“It wasn’t that long ago that the subject of exercise was an entirely foreign concept to me. I had never purposefully engaged in any kind of regular, daily exercise routine ever in my entire life before 2004. Never! I just didn’t have the will nor the desire to invest even just a few minutes each day to move my body and make it sweat. Why should I bother because it hurts too much and it doesn’t do any good anyway? At least that’s what I thought before I started livin’ la vida low-carb.”

What do you think of when you hear the word exercise? Beefy, muscular men bench pressing 500 pounds? Running like a little rat on a treadmill for hours on end? Scantly clad men and women who seem to be putting on a show while humiliating anyone who doesn’t look like them? If so, then you feel exactly how I used to before I decided the time was right for me to start exercising. The important thing to remember is this is not about anyone or anything else but YOU and your desire to lose weight and get healthy. Don’t worry about what other people look like or what you think they will say about your not-so-fit body. It doesn’t matter because you are taking proactive steps to better yourself now. But let me tell you a secret. While they may never say it directly to your face while you are going through your weight loss journey, many of these gym rats are actually pretty jealous of you for having the courage that it takes to put yourself through the process of turning your health around for the better. I can’t tell you how many of these big burly guys come up to me now who knew me when I weighed over 400 pounds and they tell me how I inspired them to get serious about their workouts. Say what? Yep, you heard me right. Although my muscles are quite puny in comparison to these Mr. Universe-types, they saw how hard I worked to get my weight down nearly 200 pounds with day-by-day determination. Never underestimate the power of YOUR influence on those around you during this process.

A government review released in March 2005 found that two-thirds of people who are successful at losing weight gain it all back within a year and a whopping 97 percent gain it all back within 5 years. That’s why I keep telling people that I don’t think I’ve accomplished anything with my weight loss yet because I haven’t kept it off long enough. Sure, I’m in a better position than I have ever been in before, but I’m not out of the woods just yet. I strongly believe that I will keep the weight off, but I have no evidence to back up that claim at this point. Yet, I do not plan on getting back to 410 ever again. Or even 310 or 250 for that matter! I’m just not going to allow that to happen. One of the reasons why I feel I can keep my weight down is my relentless commitment to regular exercise. It has literally boosted my strength and energy and allows my body to eat more food (and, yes, that means more carbs!) without having a negative effect on my weight. Except for the few pounds of muscle weight I have developed, my weight has remained relatively stable for nearly two years. And yet my waist size continues to shrink! Every truly succesful weight loss program needs to incorporate exercise of some sort for a well-rounded weight and health maintenance plan. Too many dieters sit on their laurels and don’t do any exercise. It’s a sad fact that people actually brag about being able to lose weight without working out. Where’s the honor in that? Sure, it sounds better to people when you tell them they can lose weight without exercise, but they miss out on some truly remarkable benefits when they neglect this simple yet amazing element in this quest for better health.

A study released in October 2005 from researchers at Duke University found that as little as 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise each day will improve your fitness and cut your chances of getting cardiovascular disease. If you are livin’ la vida low-carb and want to kickstart your weight loss into high gear, then this kind of exercise is exactly what you need to be doing in combination with your low-carb way of eating to burn more fat and build more muscle. Too many people think they have to engage in super high-intensity workouts over long periods of time for them to be effective at burning fat. But the fact is you simply need to get your heart rate up and sweat a little bit for the benefits to appear in your weight and health. Set a goal for yourself of what you think you can do in a week. Start off with a reasonable number like 10 miles walking in a week. That’s just 2 miles a day for five days. When I first started, it took everything I had to reach two miles walked, but I kept at it. Sweating profusely and feeling my heart beat hard in my chest was my reality in those first few weeks, but now I can easily walk 4-5 miles per day in about an hour on the treadmill or 8-10 miles per day on the elliptical machine. Work your way up to the next level and push yourself to better and better fitness. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it does eventually happen if you stick with a regular routine. Try to avoid the temptation to take a few days off just because you don’t feel like it. It’s okay to skip one day every once in a while, but this should be very rare. Be a stickler with your exercise just like you are with your carbs. Don’t get sidetracked thinking it’s not important because it is VERY important.

One thing to remember about exercise is that it doesn’t guarantee weight loss. In fact, you may have some weeks when you exercise your body hard, but experience no weight loss at all. We’ve seen this happen on the NBC reality show “The Biggest Loser” many times when the contestants didn’t lose any pounds on the scale. But that doesn’t mean the exercise they did isn’t working in other ways to improve their health. Sadly, many people simply stop exercising when the scale stops moving downward. Try to avoid falling into this trap because you are helping your heart more than you know when you make the lifetime commitment to exercise. As hard as it is to believe, you can actually improve your cardiovascular fitness and reduce your risk for heart disease by exercising without losing weight. What you may find, though, with the lack of weight loss is that you are actually losing body fat and increasing lean muscle mass while reducing other health risk factors. Don’t ever neglect these benefits of regular exercise to your low-carb life. I dropped my body fat percentage from 50 percent down to 11 percent because of livin’ la vida low-carb and regular exercise. It can happen.
