What’s the first thing most people think about when you tell them you are on “low-carb”? Meat, cheese, and eggs? Mounds of bacon and butter? High-protein diet? A dangerous, unhealthy “fad” diet? I’ve heard all of these and more since my decision to start livin’ la vida low-carb three years ago. But the fact of the matter is low-carb is arguably one of the most nutrient-dense diet plans you will find anywhere. Contrary to the common criticisms people make about it, low-carb living as prescribed by the various proven and effective plans out there such as Atkins, Protein Power, South Beach, and others is extremely healthy because it gives you all the nutrients your body needs despite the fact that you are reducing the number of total carbohydrates in your diet.
Carbohydrates in and of themselves are not all bad as long as you eat the right kind of carbs that will give you the fiber and nutrients you need without unnecessarily raising your blood glucose or insulin levels. One of the problems with livin’ la vida low-carb is that there is not a solid definition of what it is. How low should you go with the carbs? This is an issue that comes with the territory of any discussion and debate about “low-carb,” but I don’t think it is one we should get too hung up on. For the purpose of this discussion, I consider “low-carb” to be any diet with less than 50g carbs daily. While 50g is way too much for some people and 0g is not enough carbs for others, I think anywhere in between those two parameters is very clearly a significantly less amount of carbs than the vast majority of people who are on the recommended low-fat diets consuming all that sugar, white flour, starchy foods, and processed foods.
While the media likes to frequently refer to “low-carb” as “NO-CARB” and thus inferring that people on low-carb are “cutting out an entire food group” and avoiding vegetables, the fact remains that nothing could be further from the truth for most low-carbers. In the first two weeks of Induction, you keep your carbs at a minimum of 20g daily. But then you get to begin adding back EVEN MORE fruits and vegetables as you move through the subsequent stages of the program. In fact, a survey conducted last year of people following a low-carb plan found that vegetable consumption doubled from what the participants ate prior to their low-carb lifestyle. WOW! This is BIG news that you never hear anyone in the media talk about. So what about the rest of America? A Journal of Nutrition survey gave the grim news that only 45 percent of Americans eat the recommended five or more serving of fruits and vegetables per day. Even more startling is that nearly one-third of these supposedly healthy foods eaten are loaded with garbage carbs, including iceberg lettuce, tomatoes, French fries, bananas and orange juice. In other words, these so-called healthy diets rich in fruits and vegetables that people think they are eating as recommended by their government and health “experts” is nothing more than CRAPOLA! Pseudo-healthy junk food is what those things are and they are making us fatter and fatter all under the guise of being GOOD for us. UGH!
I overheard someone recently talking about how many grapes she had eaten that morning which she immediately used to justify eating a high-sugar, high-carb vending machine snack food because she had “eaten healthy” with the sugar-loaded grapes. Yikes! No wonder we are in an obesity crisis today that just seems to keep getting worse by the minute. People are so poorly misinformed and misguided about what it really means to eat a “healthy” diet.
Okay, I’ve teased you long enough. I suppose you want to know my shocking news about low-carb, huh? It may not be a surprise to many of you who have been reading my blog at LivinLaVidaLowCarb.com, but this issue often comes up with new people to my podcast or columns. Although I am extremely enthusiastic about the low-carb lifestyle because of the change it has made in my life, that doesn’t mean I believe low-carb is for everyone. Say what? Yep, you heard me right, low-carb is NOT for everyone. As a strong advocate of low-carb, most people just automatically assume that I think livin’ la vida low-carb is a one-size-fits-all diet. Guess what? There’s no such thing in this world!
Of course, enemies of low-carb like to pull out this excuse that low-carb doesn’t work for everyone to convince people that they need to eat a low-fat/low-calorie/portion controlled diet. Well, just as low-carb doesn’t work for everyone, neither does low-fat. The key is to find what works for you and then stick with it. If eating a low-fat diet or restricting your calories is the way you choose to improve your health and stabilize your weight, then more power to ya. But if you haven’t even TRIED the low-carb lifestyle to see if it works for you, then you can’t exactly know if it’s for you or not. It could be the miracle for you that it was for me.
My friend and fellow low-carb blogger Laura Dolson from the About.com Low-Carb Diets web site created a list of “things to keep in mind” when deciding whether a controlled-carb eating plan is for you. Here’s what she wrote:
1. Your diet history – what was your experience on previous diets like?
2. Food and eating behaviors – why do you eat the way you do?
3. Medical history – what is the state of your overall health?
4. Commitment – are you willing to make this a lifestyle change?
Dolson says that last one is the KEY to whether you will be successful with ANY weight loss plan and that’s what I would say to anyone wanting to know if low-carb is for them or not. My suggestion is for people who feel that every other way of eating has failed them should at least give low-carb a chance to show what it can do. For me, my life will never be the same again after losing over 180 pounds. I’ll NEVER weigh 410 pounds again in my life! EVER!
Here’s a five-step plan of action for you to jumpstart your low-carb lifestyle that will recap some of the major points we have discussed this week:
1. Buy a low-carb book and learn what this way of eating is all about.
2. Empty your cupboards and refrigerator of carb-loaded foods.
3. Stock up on high-quality, delicious and nutritious low-carb foods.
4. Be confident that this is the right thing for you to do.
5. Execute the plan as if your life depended on it (and it very well may!).
Is low-carb for everyone? Not necessarily. But it may be just the thing for YOU!
