Hey and welcome back to the historic Episode 11 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” This is the first time since my podcast show began that I have done more than one show in a week and there’s three more exciting episodes coming to you the rest of the week. WOO HOO! With the excitement of the new year of 2007 in full force now, we really wanted to help people get started off on their low-carb weight loss plan the right way so they can be the success that I was three years ago when I made it my New Year’s resolution to lose weight on the Atkins diet. Listen to Episode 10 of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show” at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com to learn more about my 180-pound weight loss experience in 2004.

Today we are going to go over some of my own personal tips about getting started on the low-carb life so you know exactly what you should be doing when you are on this amazing lifestyle change for the very first time. One of the first things you need to do is find the right kinds of foods to help keep you on the straight and narrow, especially in the early days of beginning a low-carb program. That’s where our friends at CarbSmart.com come in. They carry a full line of sugar-free, low-carb products designed specifically to help you lose weight while enjoying great-tasting foods in the process. Visit CarbSmart.com and check out their “Induction-friendly low carb foods” section for lots of great ideas about how to start your low-carb diet off the right way.

Also, I’m pleased to tell you about two incredible books that will help further your understanding about why livin’ la vida low-carb is so important. First, we have the long-awaited debut book release from Connie Bennett entitled “SUGAR SHOCK!” Go to SugarShock.com to find out why everyone is talking about this bestselling new book that advocates shunning sugar for the sake of improving your health. I have personally read this book from cover to cover and believe it is one of the most important health books of the 21st century that every single diabetic and obese person needs to read. I’ll post my review of SUGAR SHOCK! in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com. Another book you will want to check out is Anthony Colpo’s explosive and in-depth 2006 release called “The Great Cholesterol Con.” Citing study after study of scientific evidence that proves the warnings against saturated fat, cholesterol, and low-carb diets are just plain wrong, Colpo recently updated and expanded his book to over 425 pages jam-packed with even more solid facts to arm you with the truth. It’s even available as an e-book for less than $10 with a BONUS gift. Be sure to visit TheGreatCholesterolCon.com for more information and read my review of this book in the show notes section of TheLivinLowCarbShow.com.

Okay, it’s time to get serious about low-carb living because you have made up your mind this is exactly what you need to do. Since it has not been that long ago that I decided to take this incredible journey for myself, let me offer you 10 tips that helped me when I first started and will help you now as you begin livin’ la vida low-carb.

1. Go buy the low-carb book of your choice to get started the right way. Don’t assume that you know how to do low-carb until you get the book. If you try to do any kind of low-carb program without educating yourself about it first, then you will most certainly fail. There are many excellent books available out there, including Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, Protein Power, The South Beach Diet, and more. If you are unsure about which plan is right for you, then pick up a copy of Jonny Bowden’s “Living The Low-Carb Life” which reviews all the major low-carb plans side-by-side. Whatever plan you decide to do, just be sure to get the book first!

2. Starting as soon as possible, get on the Induction phase of your low-carb plan and stick with it for those first two weeks. This means reducing your carb intake to no more than 20g per day and staying there for the next two weeks. There’s no negotiating on this one because you need to get your body into ketosis, or fat-burning mode. Resist the urge to cheat even a little. Eat exactly what you are allowed to eat as outlined in your low-carb book and watch your body begin transforming itself from a carb-burning into a fat-burning machine! It happens within these first two weeks of Induction.

3. Try not to weigh yourself too much in the beginning because that can discourage you from continuing. However, if weighing yourself often motivates you, then do it. I sure did, several times a day actually, because I LOVED watching the numbers go down. The fun thing about being on a low-carb program is the weight tends to pour off extremely fast during the first month or so of weight loss. I lost about 30 pounds in January 2004 when I began my low-carb lifestyle and then I lost another 40 more pounds in February! Get excited about what is about to happen for you in the next few months and visualize it right now. See, you’re getting skinnier already!

4. If you are not currently exercising, then get on a regular exercise routine very soon. Even if you just do 20-30 minutes of walking at a pace that is comfortable for you, then do it and make it a planned part of your life. I have exercised just about every single day since I started livin’ la vida low-carb and consider it a key part of my weight loss success. You are depriving your body of so many health benefits if you do not incorporate regular exercise into your weight loss efforts. Pretty soon you will find that those 20-30 minutes per day are not near enough and your body will begin to crave exercise like it used to crave hot fudge cake! I’m serious! Big changes are coming!

5. Start drinking water like you have never drunk it before. If the tap water in your area does not taste good, then get your favorite bottled water or filter and then drink it like it’s going out of style. When I first started losing weight, I was drinking upwards of two gallons per day to help remove the toxins that had built up inside of my body and to flush out the stored fat that was weighing me down. Yes, it’s inconvenient going to the bathroom as much as you will, but you are healing your body of the years of self-inflicted damage you have cause. Drink water with your meals and snacks and you’ll go through it very quickly. Just be sure you do not refrigerate the water because the colder temperature makes it harder to drink the larger amounts you need to consume. Stay well-hydrated and you’ll notice you won’t be hungry as often either.

6. Take a daily multivitamin along with necessary supplements, such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, fish oil, and fiber. These are absolutely necessary to help your body make up for the nutrients it needs while eating a low-carb lifestyle. The potassium will help with the leg cramps that you may or may not have when starting a low-carb diet and the fiber will help keep you regular as you begin this new way of eating. Getting adequate supplementation is a must when you begin low-carb.

7. Continue to educate yourself about livin’ la vida low-carb by listening to podcast shows like this one and accessing the literally hundreds of low-carb resources available at your fingertips online today. You can find virtually every low-carb link that exists on the Internet in 2007 at my “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Links” blog located at LowCarbLinks.blogspot.com. There you will find links to low-carb information, research, blogs, forums, podcasts, weight loss success stories, product reviews, and much, much more. Also, get your hands on as many books and other publications to continue the learning process about what makes low-carb living so fantastic.

8. If you are serious about losing weight, then try this bold move. Go to your favorite clothing store (not a big and tall store!) and purchase a garment that you hope to be able to wear by the time you reach your goal weight. I bought a pair of size 42/32 khaki pants in January 2004 at a time when I still weighed over 400 pounds and was wearing size 62/32 pants. My wife thought I was crazy for buying a pair of pants 20 inches smaller than what I wore at the time. But I hung them up on the wall as a constant reminder of where I wanted to be when I reached my goal. I’d try on what I called my “goal pants” from time to time until one day they actually fit! Today these pants that my wife thought were so “small” when I bought them actually fit loose on me and I wear them quite often. Oh how good it feels to reap the spoils of success!

9. Find support either online or from your friends and family during your weight loss. A support system is vital when you are doing low-carb because of all the negative publicity in the media and misconceptions many people have about the low-carb lifestyle. If you need encouragement, I am always available to you anytime via e-mail at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. Just don’t get discouraged and give up. Never give up!

10. Finally, when people try to discourage you from losing weight on the low-carb lifestyle (and they will!), remember those of us who have already been through the struggles you are now facing and have overcome them triumphantly. There are countless numbers of low-carb weight loss success stories across the country and around the world who are cheering you on to victory and we are standing at the finish line waiting for you to cross. This race is not about how fast you can sprint, but rather the endurance you will need to persevere to the end. Keep your head down and trudge forward with all of your might. The payoff at the end is so worth it!

Those are my 10 tips for getting started on the low-carb lifestyle that I hope you have found informative as you begin this new journey for yourself. Tune in tomorrow for yet another podcast show featuring my personal advice about doing low-carb the right way. I’ll be featuring the story of someone who attempted livin’ la vida low-carb on her own that produced miserable, yet predictable results. You won’t want to miss it! That’s it for this special edition of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore” and I thank you for listening. We’ll be back again tomorrow and until then, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!
