Can you believe today is January 1, 2007? WOW! A brand new year is now upon us as millions of people use today as the starting place for a recommitment to their health. It’s as if we have been given a clean slate and now with the turn of a calendar we can right all the wrongs that took place in 2006. While it is admirable that so many people will do something about those extra pounds that have creeped up on them, it has always baffled me why people wait until New Year’s Day to get serious about weight loss. Why is it that there’s this annual ritual of making a New Year’s resolution to lose weight when it seems like nobody sticks with it over the long-term? So what’s the point? Of course, I’m one to talk since my journey began three years ago today.

Yep, like a lot of people, I had reached a point in my life that I was not at all happy with. Although I was a relatively jovial 32-year old 6’3″ tall man married to a wonderful woman, there was one area of my life that needed serious changing before it robbed me of my health and very well could have led to a premature death. You see, I was morbidly obese weighing in at an unflattering 410 pounds, wearing size 62-inch waist pants on the verge of ripping at any moment, 5XL shirts with the button popping off of them, taking prescription medications for cholesterol, high blood pressure, and breathing, and constantly feeling like there was something wrong with me. I’ve always been a confident person and able to deflect criticism that comes my way, but now the battle was internal. Little did I know this would be a major turning point in my life.

After trying and failing in the past with such diet plans as Slim-Fast, low-fat, 1000-calorie a day, and other so-called “diets” I will refrain from mentioning here, I decided to give the Atkins diet a try. What did I have to lose, everything else had already failed me many times before in my battle with obesity? The answer to that question came rather quickly–I lost 30 pounds in the first month and another 40 pounds in February 2004. By the end of that year, I had dropped a staggering 180 pounds and felt like I was given a new lease on life that had previously been such a struggle. Jimmy Moore was fat no more and nothing was gonna stop me now! You can read more about my low-carb weight loss success story in my book “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb: My Journey From Flabby Fat To Sensationally Skinny In One Year” available at Amazon.com or by clicking on the link in the show notes section at TheLivinLowCarbShow.com.

Three years later to the day I started the low-carb lifestyle, I’m proud to announce to you that I am STILL livin’ la vida low-carb and have maintained my weight loss. Yes, you heard me right. Despite warnings by the media and the so-called health “experts” that you can’t keep the weight off over the long-term using a low-carb diet, that is as my wife Christine would say, “just a bunch of bullfunky!” It’s a myth perpetuated by those who have animosity towards the low-carb nutritional approach and is not based on any hard evidence whatsoever. The fact is people who have made low-carb living their permanent lifestyle change get to enjoy lots of delicious-tasting foods AND lose weight doing it. All I have to say to people who choose to eat those disgusting low-fat and fat-free cardboard foods is NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH! Maybe that’s why I was so irritable being on a low-fat diet so many time–constantly hungry, felt more deprived than I’ve ever been on my low-carb plan, and was miserable to be around. Christine will tell you, she has especially enjoyed my low-carb lifestyle much better than the low-fat diets I have been on if for no other reason but the fact that I’m in a much better mood eating low-carb. And who wouldn’t be? We’ll get into more of the nitty gritty of the low-carb lifestyle in the upcoming episodes of the podcast this week.

So, you’ve made it your New Year’s resolution to lose weight today, huh? Can I ask you to do something even better than that? Rather than committing to go on a diet to lose 20, 50 or even 100 pounds so you can get back to your old way of eating again as soon as possible, how about making January 1, 2007 the first day of a lifetime commitment to better health? In other words, make it your New Life Resolution instead. Sure, you’ll start off these first few weeks and months as a day-by-day resolution to lose weight and you’ll probably feed off the excitement that comes from that. But something will come up to discourage you like a weight loss stall, a strong craving for something you shouldn’t eat, or you’ll even get sick. Hey, these things happen so you might as well prepare for them right now. You may start having second thoughts about why you even attempted to lose weight again because you believe it’s just some stupid exercise in futility since nobody ever stays on their New Year’s resolution anyway, right? Well, I have two words for you–STOP IT! Get over your little pity party about how hard this is going to be and how miserable you think you are going to feel going through this process. I know EXACTLY how it feels to be trapped inside the body of a man who is screaming for help desperate to find just a glimmer of hope and inspiration to defeat the obesity monster for good. That was me just three years ago today. But the good news is I DID rise triumphant over that obstacle and now can proudly say I am a happy and healthy man because I didn’t lose faith in fulfilling my dream. When you get past those first few days, it only gets better from there. Then, the days add up to weeks and then months and before you know it, you’ve reached your goal. It happened for me and it WILL happen for you, too.

When you are on the Atkins/low-carb approach for a few months, then it really begins to sink in that your New Year’s resolution really is your New Life resolution because eating low-carb transforms into a lifetime commitment that you will never ever regret. It has literally turned my world upside down forever! I am now someone who pays close attention to the amount and quality of carbohydrates that I put in my mouth. It really is that simple. If you make livin’ la vida low-carb your new life resolution by committing to it 100 percent and then doing it like your life depended on it (and it very well may!), then you’ll be able to join me in celebration of your own weight loss success in 2007 and beyond. Hang in there and know that you can do it! I’m here to cheer you on!

If you are even THINKING about losing weight, then let me encourage you to start livin’ la vida low-carb TODAY! What better time is there for you to put into action a plan that will help you become the thinner, healthier person you have dreamed about becoming? That was my vision three years ago when I made up my mind that this was probably my last chance! I’m REALLY going to do it this time around! And then I did.

Now, today, January 1, 2007, I can stand before you as a 220-pound low-carb weight loss success story because this miraculous lifestyle change really worked for me. Will it work for everyone? Probably not. But that shouldn’t deter YOU from trying it for yourself to see if it is the answer you’ve been looking for your entire life. I know that my life will never be the same again. So, whatever you are doing RIGHT NOW–STOP! And start livin’ la vida low-carb TODAY! It’ll make 2007 a year that you may never regret for the rest of your life.

That’s it for this special New Year’s Day 2007 edition of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore.” Be sure to tune in for the four extra BONUS episodes of the podcast show the rest of this week and tell everyone you know who wants to lose weight in the new year about this show.
