Whether you have downloaded this show today in your iPod from iTunes or are listening to it directly through thelivinlowcarbshow.com, I’m so glad you decided to make my podcast a small part of your life. It really has been my privilege to begin this new format for getting the word out about the low-carb lifestyle. I have been flooded with literally hundreds of e-mails and comments that have come in over the past two weeks and the response has been completely overwhelming…in a good way. On behalf of all of us here at Grasshopper New Media and from the bottom of my heart personally, I want to express my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to you for giving this former morbidly obese man whose life was radically changed for the better because of low-carb living a chance to share with others the miraculous transformation that can happen in their life, too!

You know, weight loss really is a journey of choice that YOU and you alone must make. The government can’t lose weight for you, your parents can’t lose weight for you, your husband or wife can’t lose weight for you, and I can’t lose weight for you. If you are listening to me right now and you are overweight or obese, guess who needs to do something about that? That’s right, it’s YOU! Stop making excuses for why you can’t and start taking actions that show you can. I’m happy to help you in this noble cause, but first you have to want to help yourself by making up your mind RIGHT HERE RIGHT NOW that you are ready to make a change. You may think you don’t need to change, but the scale and those tight-fitting pants and shirts say otherwise. End the denial, which ain’t just a river in Egypt by the way, and get going on the most exciting adventure of your entire life. Permanent weight loss is not just a pie-in-the-sky dream, but is instead a tangible, attainable reality that you can experience with a little bit of a concerted effort on your part to make it happen.

Will you make me a promise right now? Before you listen any further to this podcast show, settle in your mind this one thing and say it out loud: I WILL succeed at weight loss by doing what it takes to get there. Say it with me: I WILL succeed at weight loss by doing what it takes to get there. That’s easy enough, isn’t it? Well, actually, it is. Not that losing weight is necessarily an easy proposition, but convincing yourself that you WILL succeed with a little effort gets you started off better than if your mindset is predetermined to fail. Take this very seriously because it is a solemn vow between you and God at this very instant in your life. I want you to commit to making this promise your life’s motto for the next 3 months, year, two years…however long it takes to shed those pounds!

The bottom line is you don’t need to toil in obesity la-la land anymore and beginning this all-important first step of your low-carb journey will bring you that much closer to being an overcomer. Your days of failing on diet after diet are over and done with. No more rollercoaster rides for you because you have found a way to eat that tastes great and is being shown in study after study to be an extremely healthy and nutrient-dense way of eating for people who don’t need to lose weight. How about that? Frankly, with all the science that has come out about the positive health benefits that come from eating this way, I’m surprised everyone isn’t livin’ la vida low-carb! In future episodes of “The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show,” I will offer up plenty of reasons why the low-carb lifestyle is a nutritional approach that will keep fit and healthy for many years to come. Stay tuned!

Today, I’d like to share with you two surveys that show livin’ la vida low-carb is not just some passing fly-by-night fad as the media would have you believe, but rather it is here to stay for many years to come. Links detailing both of the surveys I’m going to outline for you are available in the show notes section for Episode 3 at www.thelivinlowcarbshow.com. Be sure to check ’em out.

The first survey was conducted by a market research company named Integras Restaurant Audit. In the 18-page report called “Catering to the Carb-Conscious Consumer,” the researchers observed 30,000 U.S. households representing every demographic and split them into one of two groups–carb-conscious and carb-neutral.. All of the study participants had their eating habits examined and were asked a series of questions about health, nutrition, convenience, price, variety and selection of the foods that they buy when they go out to eat.

Not surprisingly, 82 percent of those who watched their carb intake were found to frequent restaurants that offered the nutritional content of the foods that they buy when dining out; 77 percent of the low-carb eaters are likely to visit fast food restaurants that cater to their needs, such as Hardee’s and their prominent low-carb menu offerings. Interestingly, very few low-carbers in the study dined at McDonald’s in the previous thirty days. At the same time, a significant number of people on low-carb have visited restaurants that actively advertise a low-carb menu, including Applebee’s, TGI Friday’s, Chili’s and Cracker Barrel, among others. The fact that these restaurants actively sought to meet the needs of the low-carb consumer was the deciding factor that convinced them to visit the restaurant, according to the survey.

While the low-carb lifestyle is not at the heightened awareness that it once was, the survey noticed that people are still very concerned about their carbohydrate intake. Well, shazam, somebody stop the presses! Furthermore, the study went on to describe the low-carb lifestyle as “a holistic, total-health” approach to nutrition. WOWsers! Is that REALLY something positive about low-carb that I hear? I especially enjoyed what the editor of AMonline.com Elliot Maras said about the longevity of low-carb from an economic standpoint. Here’s the quote:

“In the last year, some market researchers have claimed that the low carb diet is fading. This study sheds some light on the issue. The popularity of the low carb diets may have in fact declined; every trend peaks and levels off. But as others have claimed, the lifestyle appears here to stay. This new study quantifies the extent to which low carb consumers differ in their consumption habits. This is an audience that no one in the food service industry can afford to ignore.”

This analysis of the low-carb consumer is exactly right and it is time restaurants and other businesses make the necessary adjustments to their menu and their attitudes about people on low-carb so they won’t lose any more business. Give the low-carb community what we want and we’ll be loyal for life! And we aren’t going anywhere for a very long time, so companies need to get used to us low-carbers.

Now going hand-in-hand with the first survey is a public opinion poll conducted by the International Food Information Council Foundation. They asked 1,000 adults 134 questions via e-mail regarding their thoughts on calories, carbs, fats and other nutrition-related questions. While the researchers put a lot of attention on the seeming lack of knowledge that people have about calories, I was drawn to another statistic in the survey that was much more interesting–nearly one-half of the survey participants have deliberately cut back on the amounts and kinds of carbohydrates that they eat, including bread, cereal and pasta in an effort to eat healthier. Plus, nearly two-thirds of the respondents are “trying to eat less sugar, consume more whole grains, and consume more fiber.” Did you hear that? Every other person in America today is significantly reducing or eliminating carbohydrates from their diet and two out of every three are eating less sugar and more fiber–ON PURPOSE! By the way, our sponsor ChocoPerfection bars have ZERO sugar and a whopping 14 grams of fiber per bar.

Whether the media and the so-called health “experts” want to admit it or not, the late great Dr. Robert C. Atkins and all the others who have so passionately trumpeted the low-carb cause have left an indelible mark on our culture that will last well into the future. This understanding by the consumer about why carbohydrate consumption is bad for your health is something that will continue to frustrate food companies that manufacture unhealthy high-carb items–do I need to name names? While they keep hoping the low-carb “fad” will just go away, the truth we’ve seen from these two surveys today is that the spirit of livin’ la vida low-carb is as strong as ever!

So whenever you hear someone bemoaning low-carb, remind them that half of Americans are carb-conscious nowadays in an effort to help them lose weight and get healthy. Make that YOUR priority and then reap the lasting long-term benefits that this miraculous program has to offer you. That’s it for this episode, so until next time, keep on livin’ la vida low-carb!
