Dr. Daniel Howell, Liberty University professor and author of The Barefoot Book is our guest today on The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show with Jimmy Moore!

Listen in as Dr. Howell and Jimmy discuss not just the whys but also the hows of leading a barefoot life and run like a caveman (or maybe like your grandfather used to). Topics discussed include the various laws and codes concerning public barefooting, the social implications of not wearing shoes, how to change cultural attitudes about being barefoot, whether feet are inherently germy and filthy, why shoes are bad for your feet, when shoes are actually necessary, how high heels lead to disproportionate arthritis in women, the sneakers vs. flip-flops debate, the best surfaces for barefoot walking and running, and way, WAY more! If you’re into the whole primal barefoot movement, then you’re gonna want to hear what Dr. Howell has to share in today’s episode!

  1. Great show Jimmy!
Coming from NY to Hawaii I love that most of my “shoes” are slippahs now. Best deal is a pr for $1.99 You would not think of entering a home or the beach with them on, you simply remove them with all the others in a big heap!
Many stores and my doctors office (Chinese medicine) request you remove them before entering (Hawaiian style).
Many a time we are at the car or home before we remember the silppah…
I see more lately who are going barefoot and some with the 5 fingers but in this heat I would think barefoot the better choice…enough fungus around already! Thanks for the reminder of why I love it here!

    1. If you liked him a lot, James, be sure to vote for him at the end of the year as one of your favorites. He may make another appearance during “Encore Week” next year if you do.

  2. Went on my first barefoot walk today. Well, half of the hour-long walk was barefoot. Figured I better not over do it the first day.

Weather was a wonderful 75 degrees here in the midwest. The walking path I was on was mostly cleared of snow, but there were a few spots I had to trudge through some mighty cold melting snow. Brrrr. What does a barefooter do in very cold weather? Would have to have a BFT shoe of some sort like a Vibram 5.

Interesting topic this episode. Thanks Jimmy!

  3. Hi Jimmy,

I know from personal experiences the power of at least wearing minimalist shoes- my arch was starting to really hurt when I walked in regular shoes, but after a week or so of walking in Vibrams I had no pain at all!
I do have to wonder though, what he thinks of wearing socks. My feet get really cold when I walk around my house with nothing on! I figure socks are a bit constrictive, but better than wearing actual shoes…

      1. Well you probably sweat when you have socks on as well. Just that the socks absorb the sweat.

I do sweat with flip- flops: the soles of my feet get wet…

  4. I love to do barefoot Gardening. It helps me get in tune with the soil and how my plants are growing. If i like how the soil composition is feeling, then i know my plants will too! I also have noticed that i don’t crush as many plants when i am barefoot gardening.

  5. I didn’t find his information very helpful; very little about the health benefits. Also, his assertion that stores don’t have insurance reasons for requiring footwear is questionable; having worked a lot of retail, I know how paranoid managers are that someone will get hurt in their store and sue. One broken bottle that isn’t instantly cleaned can be hard. His creds weren’t that great either; a biology professor at a college that doesn’t believe in evolution isn’t promising…
