It was about one year ago that we featured a podcast with today’s featured interview guest as she released her debut book in a series of Paleo cookbooks finding inspiration from international cuisines. That first trip was to Italy, but today Sarah Fragoso from “Everyday Paleo” is back sharing about the next stop on her world tour–THAILAND! The new book is called Everyday Paleo Thai Cuisine: Authentic Recipes Made Gluten-free and contains some rather interesting recipes and insights into the Thai food and culture.
Listen in as Jimmy and Sarah joke about co-hosting a podcast together, discuss the interesting challenges she faced while in Thailand (HOLY GUACAMOLE!), the lack of education on quality food ingredients in Thailand, they are inundated with soybean oil and told it’s the healthy fat to use, the “white substance” the locals kept putting on her food, why they cook for convenience rather than health (and being misinformed about what’s good for them), why Americans should care about the food culture of other countries, the restaurants in Thailand are Thai food almost exclusively, the respect they expect for the ingredients used in the Thai cuisine, the challenge of making sauces with Paleo ingredients, her homemade oyster sauce made with real oysters and coconut aminos, how traveling to other countries has given her exposure to new ingredients (stink beans!) she would have never known about, if you find stink beans in America then Sarah will send you a FREE COPY of her book, what she put in her mouth that tasted like something died, the “fishy gut sauce” soup she struggled to get down, her foray into eating scorpion (tastes like shrimp!), how her children dealt with being exposed to the Thai culture, the major cultural differences between America and Thailand, whether she saw people with obesity and diabetes there, why she didn’t want to glaze over the problems that exist in Southeast Asia, how their stress levels are so much lower than Westernized society, how coming back to America from Thailand “took time to adjust” again, how she handled the white rice issue in her book (“Have you had your rice today?” is a common greeting), how you can adapt any of her recipes to your specific nutritional needs, the Deep Fried Pork recipe I loved from her book (Sarah’s favorite street food in Thailand that she ate everyday–it’s “umptuous”), Sarah recommends the Stir Fried Crispy Pork Belly recipe for low-carbers, and so much more! It’s always a delight to share the great work of Sarah Fragoso and today’s podcast is no different. ENJOY!
