KEY QUOTE: “In the minds of bodybuilders, gluconeogenesis is overstated. But in the rest of the world it is not. That protein effect is heavily dependent on one’s level of insulin resistance and amount of lean muscle mass.” — Dr. Adam Nally

Here’s what Jimmy and Adam talked about in Episode 35:

– Does each meal need to match your macronutrient ratio for keto?

Hi guys! I have been following the keto diet for the past two months. I just ordered the Ketonix breath ketone analyzer to see if I am in ketosis or not. I’ve already lost 14 pounds, but I have a question for you guys to address: Does each meal that I eat need to fit the macronutrient ratio of fat/protein/carbohydrates of 75/20/5? Or should I aim to be there each day? Thanks for helping me with this one.

Is there such a thing as ‘fat but fit’?

1. Is coconut sugar and other natural sweeteners okay to use on a ketogenic diet?

Hello Jimmy & Doc Muscles,

For the past couple days, all I’ve done is listen to almost all of the Keto Talk podcast episodes you’ve aired. You guys are an amazing team with a fun and simplified format. Keep up the good work!

What are your thoughts on coconut sugar? Would it negatively effect the ketone levels when used in the diet?

Thank you and looking forward to your weekly podcast.

Maurice

2. If dietary fat doesn’t stoke insulin, then how can you gain weight eating too much fat?

Hi Jimmy and The Doc,

I’m a big fan of your podcast.  Thanks for doing it. I have an interesting question for you today.

It is my understanding that dietary fat has no insulin response.  Let’s assume I eat the my target level of carbs and protein, but I overeat with regards to target grams of fat.  How exactly would I store body fat from overeating dietary fat if it has no insulin response.  What metabolic mechanism would make fat from excess dietary fat?

Aloha,

Toby

3. Are the effects of gluconeogenesis from too much protein overstated?

Hey guys,

Just when I thought I understood why going over my personal protein limit would cause higher blood sugar, along comes this article: http://ketogains.com/2016/04/gluconeogenesis-wont-kick-you-out-ketosis/ …which states:
“The rate of conversion of non-glucose substrate to glucose (GNG) is relatively fixed – it is slow and consistent. The rate of GNG does not seem to be impacted by the protein content of the diet.”

Now I’m confused. Is it excess protein consumption that triggers the negative effects of gluconeogenesis raising blood glucose levels and reducing blood ketones? Or is there something else going on with glucagon production or beta cell function? Could this be what causes an overnight rise in glucose?

Thanks for answering my question!

Carol

KETO TALK MAILBOX:

Hi guys,

Love your show and I’m a long time listener of Keto Talk and The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show. I’ve lost 30 pounds and have kept it off for a few years. I wasn’t unhappy with my weight and just wanted to maintain it for a while. Now I am working on getting another 20 pounds off and I would be satisfied with it ending there. I would still be a little overweight but I’m okay with that.

Here’s my problem: I’m a little frustrated by the fact that my weight will not budge during my period. In fact, I usually gain a few pounds and then it goes back to my normal weight with a few days after the period ends. But it does not go any lower no matter how low-carb I go during that week. Why does this happen? Is there anything I can do differently to make the weight come off during this time?

Thank you!

Regina

  1. I have recently discovered your podcast and i am loving it. I am training for a marathon, and have been on a keto diet since Jan’16. I am finding your show very informative.

  2. Twice in the evening i have had extreme pain right in the place where the ribs meet in front–I think it is called the solar plexus. One night ti was so excruciating that it actually spread to my back and sort of my whole chest area. I wonder if this is gallbladder and for that reason I have pulled back from trying to go from low-carb to Keto. What do you think? Does eating fat cause gall bladder disease?
