If you are interested in the low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat, ketogenic diet, then this is the podcast for you. We zero in exclusively on all the questions people have about how being in a state of nutritional ketosis and the effects it has on your health. There are a lot of myths about keto floating around out there and our two amazing cohosts are shooting them down one at a time. Keto Talk is cohosted by 10-year veteran health podcaster and international bestselling author Jimmy Moore from “Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb” and Arizona osteopath and certified bariatric physician Dr. Adam Nally from “Doc Muscles” who thoroughly share from their wealth of experience on the ketogenic lifestyle each and every Thursday. We love hearing from our fabulous Ketonian listeners with new questions–send an email to Jimmy at livinlowcarbman@charter.net. And if you’re not already subscribed to the podcast on iTunes and listened to the past episodes, then you can do that and leave a review HERE. Listen in today as Jimmy and Adam address a disturbing list of adverse reactions to a ketogenic diet claimed by a prominent member of the Paleo community in Episode 23!
KEY QUOTE: “Many of my patients came in telling me they got a kidney stone while on a low-carb diet. But what they didn’t tell me is they started the low-carb, ketogenic diet and then they cheated, got dehydrated, and stopped the diet–then they got the kidney stone.” — Dr. Adam Nally
Here’s what Jimmy and Adam talked about in Episode 23:
– Why did I lose weight fast in my face, but not in my stomach on a ketogenic diet?
I have been in ketosis for about 5 weeks. Basically my face fat is a lot less than my body fat. So i still have a nice sized gut but my face is pretty skinny. A lot of paleo are experiencing this as well. I’ve heard some people have meaty faces and some have more boney (maybe genetics). Koreans seem to have a nice big fat face and like 0% body fat, how are they doing this?! People in my life, friends and family are saying I’m too skinny, but it’s my face not the body. wondering if Doc Muscles has any ideas…maybe mineral deficiency or protein too low? I’m 80% fat, 15% protein and 5% carb, calories are anywhere from 1300-2000. How can I make my face fatter?
Thanks Jimmy!
Tim
KEY QUOTE: “This just seems really odd to me why a prominent voice in the Paleo community would promote something like this. I wonder if they did studies of people who were sick and had them go on Paleo and they had adverse reactions if she would like it if we extrapolated all the things that happened to those patients to the general Paleo population. I’m disappointed to be honest that this kind of information is getting out there and people believe it.” — Jimmy Moore
Dr. Sarah Ballantyne from “The Paleo Mom” blog– Responding to each of the so-called adverse reactions to a ketogenic diet listed by Dr. Sarah Ballantyne in this Facebook post, with detailed answers to the following claims:
Gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, constipation, GERD)
Inflammation risk
Thinning hair/hair loss
Kidney stones
Muscle cramps or weakness
Hypoglycemia
Low platelet count
Impaired concentration/cognition
Impaired mood
Renal tubular acidosis
Nutrient deficiency
Disordered mineral metabolism
Poor growth in children
Skeletal fracture
Osteopenia/osteoporosis
Increased bruising
Sepsis, infection, bacteria overgrowth
Pneumonia
Acute pancreatitis
Long QT intervals
Cardiomyopathy
Shift towards atherogenic lipid profiles (including hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia)
Heart arrhythmia
Myocardial infarction,
Menstrual irregularities and amenorrhea
Death
We get into the deep specifics about why Dr. Ballantyne’s conclusions about low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diets she believes are based on strong scientific studies have major flaws in them and why most of the research she cites simply does not apply to the general population. This is one Keto Talk episode you are NOT going to want to miss!

yeah, having been on a keto diet on/off for the last 6 years (and still haven’t died yet, haven’t had a kidney stone (and cheated a few times), have had an EKG totally fine, my blood labs have improved dramatically, and my arthritis/joint inflammation is the lowest in years), but I remember hearing about this last year (great publicity for someone’s website, btw) and being a bit concerned, so I read through the studies listed as well last year.
The things that were quickly apparent were the studies did seem geared towards epilepsy, children as well as medications. So I just went on my merry keto way.
However, it was nice to hear in this podcast from a bariatric doctor who does this all day with actual people for a decade. Point noted.
A worthwhile podcast to listen to. Thanks.
Sad that someone so smart as Sarah could be so misleading and careless in preparing her report.
I’m really enjoying this podcast and learning a lot. I’m having great success with losing weight and feeling energized. I also use intermittent fasting (20/4) which is working out well.
One negative comment: it is inappropriate to talk about “confession” of cheating on high fat in the context of Catholic Confession. You would never make fun, and laugh, at a Muslim or Jewish spiritual practice like that. So please, Jimmy, be more sensitive. You are a very nice man and would never insult or make fun of anyone on purpose. But it seems the Catholic Faith (and some strict Christians) are open season for fun. Thanks, Barbara
Hi Jimmy & Dr Nally, thank you so much for this great podcast – I listened to it twice – back to back!!! I’m very disappointed by the Paleo Mom’s negative attitude & refusal to explore the benefits of a keto diet. Personally I was tremendously helped by Sarah Ballantyne’s work – I followed the paleo autoimmune protocol with one of Sarah’s health consultants (program called SAD to AIP in 6) last year after my fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue diagnosis. The AIP was a revelation – until then I had no idea I had food sensitivities nor how these were manifesting as migraine headaches, severe brain fog, insomnia, widespread muscular & joint pain & incapacitating fatigue. For that I thank Sarah & have great admiration & respect for her work – I love her book & have shared it with many friends experiencing their own health challenges. However AIP is not the whole picture. Chronic fatigue is a problem with energy production, with mitochondrial dysfunction. This is where the LCHF keto diet has worked the next set of wonders – I love being in ketosis (especially once my ketones are over 1.5 – lower than that I feel like I’m in no-man’s land, there’s not enough fuel to keep my brain happy). The sustained energy, mental clarity & cheerful mood delivered by ketosis is so wonderful – I’d never trade that for being a sugar burner! Looking into the future & knowing that doing this now (at age 45) – keeping my blood glucose & insulin levels low & stable – should reap health benefits as I age & protect me from diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease etc etc is unbelievably motivating. That is, if I needed any extra motivation on top of feeling fabulous right here right now 🙂 Being a mum & wife it’s not all just about me – I’m providing my family with meals (& knowledge) that will enhance their health & protect them from the diseases of civilization. How wonderful is that?? Once again, thanks for a great post, all the work that went into picking apart the Paleo Mom’s post – especially the studies she was drawing from was very interesting. What I’ve learnt from my own journey is that you’ve got to educate yourself, become very good at listening to your own body & make sure you don’t take a rigid view about what works, be prepared to experiment. Thanks Jimmy & thanks Dr Nally! Andrea (Sydney, Australia)
Thank you for all the great information regarding Paleo Mom’s claims.
